" Is not It Funny " is a song recorded by American singer Jennifer Lopez. It was written by Lopez and Cory Rooney for a romantic comedy directed by Adam Shankman The Wedding Planner (2001). Shankman, however, feels that the song has too much Latin influence to be featured in the film, and it's even included in Lopez's second album, J.Lo (2001). "Is not It Funny" was released as the third single from the album on June 20, 2001, by Epic Records.
The song is used as a background music in three television commercials in Japan to promote the Subaru Legacy 2001 for a special campaign known as Three Keys Legacy . Lopez itself is also featured in all three ads.

Writing and production
While watching the rough cuts of The Wedding Planner (2001) in Canada, Jennifer Lopez and Cory Rooney brainstorm ideas for the accompanying soundtracks. Both "attract different thoughts and feelings" from the movie scene. The scene where Lopez's character is in the back seat of the car listening to Matthew McConaughey and Bridgette Wilson's character talking about marriage made Rooney think about the line "not funny how feelings you can not deny and you can not continue even if you try". According to Rooney, "all these words and melodies begin to come" to him while watching the scene. After he composed the idea for "Is not It Funny", Rooney returned to his home and "roughed off the track" and composed the chorus of the song. He then worked with Lopez for an hour to complete the song. Tommy Mottola is very enthusiastic about the song he contributes to his melody. However, Adam Shankman feels that "Is not It Funny" has too much Latin influence for the movie, due to the use of his timbales. Lopez disagrees with Shankman and the two then agree to use "Love Do not Cost a Thing" in the film.

Composition and critical responses
"Is not It Funny" is a Latin and R & amp; B, with a duration of four minutes and six seconds (4: 6). The song contains a disco rhythm in Mecca and a "bull bull", and a "strong dancefloor tap". Lyrics, Lopez sings about "creating perfect romance in your mind, then facing reality when Mr. Right is less than ideal".
The song received mixed and positive reviews. Josh Freedom du Lac of the Wall of Sound writes that "Is not It Funny" steals his "wholesale" melody from Madonna's "La Isla Bonita", despite having a better rhythmic base. He concludes that it's still "sort of walking in place, as if Lopez recorded it while standing on a treadmill". Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine responded positively to the song, calling it "highly contagious". However he criticized the "strong chorus of the backup vocalist" singing the choir. Jake Barnes of Dot Music called the song bland, writing that Lopez had to "check" Jill Scott's 2000 song "One Is the Magic Number" for how the Latin pop "should be done right". Billboard ' s Chuck Taylor praised the song production as "Grade A" and the lyrics as "smart".

Music video
The music video was filmed in a sepia tone and directed by Herb Ritts. It opens with Lopez traveling down the street where he finds a fortune teller who shows Lopez's future with a card. A group of gypsy women (one of whom is played by former Pussycat Dollar member Carmit Bachar) appears and makes over Lopez thus making it one of their own. Later Lopez finds a man (played by Mexican soap opera actor Eduardo VerÃÆ'ástegui) he can not help himself, falling in love with him. In the middle of the video, there is an extended dance sequence, where it performs a flamenco-influenced routine. Eventually everyone there started dancing together, including Lopez and his girlfriend. The video debuted on the 2nd week of July 2001 internationally and in the fall of 2001 in the US.
