Production and composition

"Break Free" was written by Savan Kotecha, Zedd and Max Martin and was produced by the last two. In an interview in May 2014 where he talked about "Break Free", Zedd talked about the desire to collaborate with Grande after hearing his voice for the first time at the Universal exhibition. He said, "I was backstage and I heard someone singing and I did not know who it was, and I just said 'I want to make a song with whoever sings now.' I do not know who it is, and it turns out he is.And fortunately, there is now a song! "The first Grande talked about collaborating in a song with Zedd at the end of April in an interview with Billboard . He described the song as "fantastic and very experimental for me" and further stated, "I never thought I would do an EDM song, but it was an eye-opening experience, and now all I want to do is dance." He then talked about the song in Wango Tango and shared that he wanted the song to be the next single.

According to the music sheet published on Musicnotes.com by Kobalt Music Services America, "Break Free" is written in a G minor key. Ariana Grande commented on the seemingly preposterous lyrics, told Time magazine, "I fight [Max Martin] on it all the time I will not sing the wrong grammatical lyrics, help me, God! , 'It's funny - just do it!' Music video

The music video was filmed from 10 to 12 June 2014. The film was directed by Chris Marrs Piliero. Having an intergalactic theme, Grande stated that the video was inspired by the 1968 science fiction film Barbarella, the Star Wars series and space in general.
