Camp David is the country retreat for the President of the United States. Located in the wooded hills of Catoctin Mountain Park near Thurmont, Maryland, is also near Emmitsburg, Maryland about 62 miles (100 km) northwest of Washington, DC Formally known as the Thurmont Navy Support Facility as it is technically an installation military, and staff primarily provided by the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps.

Originally known as Hi-Catoctin, Camp David was built as a camp for federal government agencies and their families by WPA. Construction began in 1935 and was completed in 1938. In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt turned it into a presidential retreat and named it " Shangri-La " (for a fictitious Himalayan paradise in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by the English writer James Hilton, who he jokingly referred to as the source of Raid Doolittle earlier that year). Camp David received his current name from Dwight D. Eisenhower, in honor of his father and grandson, both named David.

Catoctin Mountain Park does not indicate Camp David's location on the park map due to privacy and security issues, although it can be seen through the use of publicly accessible satellite images.

Security issues

On July 2, 2011, an F-15 intercepted a small two-seater passenger plane flying near Camp David, when President Obama was at the residence. The civilian plane, which emerged from radio communications, was intercepted about 6 miles (10 km) from the presidential retreat. The F-15 escorted the plane out of the area, and landed in Hagerstown, Maryland, close without incident. The inhabitants of the civilian plane flew between two Maryland cities and were released free of charge.
