Crime

Cleophus Prince was tried in October 1989 and convicted of theft; after serving a short sentence he was recommended to get out of the Navy. Two months later, he moved into the Buena Vista Garden apartment complex, which is close to the location of the first three murder victims. He lived in the Buena Vista complex until May 2, 1990.

Prior to his arrest, police characterized an unknown serial killer as an 'unorganized opportunist' for a common pattern in crime. In each case, the Prince enters the residence of the female victim during the day through an unlocked door or window, startling them during or after bathing, and stabs them to death with a knife taken from the kitchen.

Police also theorized the Prince might have lurked some of his victims, including Pamela Clark at a nearby Miramar fitness club, near the residence of his ex-girlfriend.

In addition to the murder, the Prince was convicted of several thefts and attempted thefts from April 1990 to February 1991.

Victim of murder

  • Tiffany Paige Schultz , datetime = "1990-01-12"> January 12, 1990 (age 20), lives in apartment complex adjacent to Buena Vista Gardens. Schultz's girlfriend was initially arrested for his murder, but was released three days later.
  • Janene Marie Weinhold , died February 16, 1990 (aged 21 years), also lives in the complex adjacent apartment. Prince is tied to his assassination through DNA testing. Her parents donated money to buy play equipment at South Clairemont Park and Recreation Center in her memory.
  • Holly Suzanne Tarr , died age (3), visited her sister and lived in her apartment is Buena Vista Gardens. The Tarr killings caused the police to believe that a serial killer stabbed a woman. A ring belonging to Tarr was given to Prince's boyfriend in December 1990.
  • Elissa Naomi Keller , died May 21, 1990 (age 38), live in the East Apartment complex San Diego where Prince moved in May 1990. Keller's gold nuggets ring traced to Prince. Keller's mother and son did not suspect the Prince.
  • Pamela Gail Clark , datetime = "1990-09-13"> September 13, 1990 (age 42), lives in University City. Two Prince's roommates testified that she already has Clark's wedding ring.
  • Amber Clark , died (age 18), lives in the University of the City with his mother Pamela. By the time Clarks's body was found, Elissa Keller had not been identified as a victim of the same killer, but the San Diego police characterized the case as the largest hunt in the troop's history.

Apprehension

A composite image of the killer was distributed in April 1990 based on an eyewitness description; a maintenance worker has seen the killer escape from the apartment complex after the death of Holly Tarr. The San Diego police initially focused their attention on a rapist accused in January 1991, citing similarities in the description, methods, and opportunities of the suspect.

Prince was arrested in February 1991 after he tried to enter the Scripps Ranch house. A woman, whom she followed back from the Miramar Road health club, was getting ready to take a shower when she heard a voice at the front door. He ran from home and sought help from his neighbors who came and faced the Prince. Prince claimed he was trying to find a female friend who entered the woman's house but eventually gave up and rushed off. Witnesses dropped the Prince's license plate number and identified the Prince from photographs, and he was arrested on 4 February 1991 in the parking lot of the health club after police warned health club workers to find Prince's car. After his arrest, he agreed to give a sample of blood and saliva, and the DNA results linked to Janene Weinhold's murder. The murder relates it to the others with the pattern indicated by the murder.

Pamela Clark routinely practiced at Miramar Road health club before noon, and the attendance log in the pool put the Prince around Holly Tarr. The prince struck him when he knew his victim was going to bathe and thus paid little attention to their surroundings. He then brags about the murder to a friend and takes to wear a dead female wedding ring on the chain around his neck. He gave another ring to his girlfriend as a Christmas present after taking it from Tarr.

Capture

Prince was arrested on March 3, 1991 in Birmingham, Alabama, where he has returned to visit family after being discharged from the Navy. He has been arrested on unrelated charges of theft and has just been released on bail. Birmingham Police, East Precinct, Officer Steven Lampley, contacted Prince by phone and asked him to come to complete some documents from his previous arrest (Arrest of Birmingham Police Department 910313853). When he returned to the station with his mother, he was taken into custody. He was extradited to San Diego where the trial was held.

Trial

After seeing physical evidence, a judge ordered the Prince to stand trial in March 1992. The defense argued that the Prince should not be released from three counts of murder for lack of evidence. Prince was found guilty on July 15, 1993 of all six counts of first-degree murder and 21 other alleged crimes. After further consideration, the jury gave death sentence. and the judge handed down the death penalty on November 5, 1993.
