Vomitus ground coffee refers to the appearance of certain vomit. In organic molecules heme red blood cells are iron, which oxidizes subsequent exposure to stomach acid. This reaction causes the vomit to look like coffee powder. Ground-coffee vomiting is a sign of possible upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Cause
Esophagitis or gastritis, for example, can bleed and produce ground-coffee vomit. When not accompanied by melena, hematemesis or decreased hemoglobin with a corresponding increase in urea and stable creatinine, other causes of coffee vomitus need to be explained; for example, gastric stasis, intestinal obstruction or ileus, which can cause oxidized feeding material to vomit. Iron supplements of vomiting can also mimic coffee powder in untrained eyes.
When associated with peptic inflammation, the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is usually involved. These drugs can disrupt the natural defenses of the stomach against a very acidic environment, causing damage to the mucosa that can cause bleeding. Therefore, it is recommended that this class of drugs be taken with food or with a full stomach. Other causes of inflammation may be caused by severe gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastritis Helicobacter pylori , portal hypertension gastropathy or malignancy.
When the bright red blood is vomited, it is called hematemesis. Hematemesis, in contrast to coffee ground vomitus, suggests that upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage is more acute or more severe, eg due to Mallory-Weiss tears), gastric ulcer or Dieulafoy, or esophageal varices. This condition may be a medical emergency and urgent care may be necessary.
Oxidized blood from upper gastrointestinal bleeding can also be excreted in the stool. It produces blackened, "live" dirt known as melena.
