History

El Nido was inhabited by humans early in 2680 BC, or even up to 22,000 years ago. This is confirmed by fossils and burial sites, dating back to the Late Neolithic Age, which can be found in many caves and excavation sites around the municipality, especially the Ille Cave in New Ibajay. Chinese merchants regularly visit the El Nido area for edible bird nests during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). In fact, El Nido is specifically mentioned in Chinese records as far back as 1225. Chau Ju-Kua, a member of the Royal Family of China, Commissary of Commerce and Customs Inspector of Port Chuan How wrote about the island, Pa-Lao-Yu or Beautiful Harbor Land in his book Chu Fan Chi.

The city is rooted in a small Tagbanwa village called Talengan. Sometime in the 16th century, a wave of migrants from the Cuyo Islands came here to settle. In the 1800s, the Spaniards arrived, and they moved to the part where PoblaciÃÆ'³n and Mabini are currently located. The first Spanish families were Canovas, VÃÆ'¡zquez, RÃÆ'os and Rey. In 1890, the Spaniards renamed it as Bacuit . At that time, the city center was Cabiging, which came to be known as Inventario. The Tionghoa family moved to the area around the same period, first settling in Langeblangeban. The first Chinese settlers were named Lim, Chin, Liao, Edsan, Ambao, Que-Ke, Lim Piao, Yu Him, Pe Phan and Pe Khen.

During the Spanish occupation of the Philippines, the city was under the jurisdiction of Taytay Municipality, which was the capital of the former Calamianes province of 1818, and Castilla Province , the area now known as Palawan north , from 1858. It remained a part of Taytay until 1916 when it officially became an independent municipality. The municipality was then known as Bacuit .

On June 17, 1954, Republicans Law no. 1140 was approved to change the name of the city from Bacuit to the present name El Nido after an edible swallow's nest ( collocalia fuciphaga ), found in the crevices of the limestone cliff. This nest, nido in Spanish, the main ingredient for gourmet nido soup, is sold for about US $ 3,000 per kilogram.

In 1957, the following barrios were created:

  • Villa Paz consists of the sites of New Igabas, Candolay, Malapaho, Mabea  ± geten, Dewel, Nalbekan, and Lapia;
  • Bebeladan consists of Mainlong, Bolabod, Balete, Culiong, Codongnon, Vigan, Pagawanen, Langeblangeban, Talulap, Bocboc, Miadiao, Avirawan, Pita, Deboluan, House-Bacaco, Kiminawit, Pamontonan, Simpian, Binabanan, Tegas, and Pinacpanacan. ;
  • New Town, comprises Sites Manogtog, Cadleman, Pinagtual, Omao, Nami, Tebey, Rock, Gay, Cataaban, and Lomocob;
  • Â ± a PasadeÃÆ' is Lamoro site, Cibatang, bulalacao, B Y ganteÃÆ' Â ± Â ± gan, QuinawaÃÆ'Â ± gan, Nagbaclao, Colantod, Loblob, and Badiang;
  • Sibaltan consists of Turatod, Buluang, Santa Monica, Senodioc, Pi'ao, CaboÃÆ'Â ± gan, Tapic, Panian, Guitan, parrot, and Nagcalasag;
  • Barotuan consists of sites Taberna, Locaroc, Nagpan, Yocoton, Calitang, Wawa, Makinit, Canoling, MabaÃÆ'Â ± Gaon, and Mapeldeten;
  • San Fernando consists of Panian, Madorianen, Dipnay, Maubog, Guenleng, Palabuayan, Las Piñas  ± gaycayan, San Pablo, and Olac-olacan; and,
  • Villa Libertad consists of Calelenday, Taolili, Boloc, Mepague, Matolatolaon, Dao, Instinct, Madacotdacot, Nasigdan, Semenled, Bancalen, and Cagbanaba sites. In the same year, Oton's village was renamed Mabini.

Because El Nido is far enough away from most of the inhabited islands of the Philippines, its pure beauty was hidden to the world until 1979 when a marine accident occurred in Bacuit Bay. As the story goes, "the tuna line paralyzes the submarine propellers in the middle of the night, forcing it to drop anchor in the entrance hole.The next morning, the diver wakes up to the stunning scenery of a towering dark cliff, dense green forest, white sandbeach, sparkling water and, topped, a series of very beautiful jade islands. "

In 1983, a dive station was established on Miniloc Island by a group of divers residing on the diveboat vessel M/V Via Mare . In the same year, major tourism began in El Nido, when Ten Knots Development Corporation, a Philippine-Japanese joint venture, opened a dive resort on Miniloc Island, and an airstrip (Airport Lio) at Villa Libertad on the mainland. In 1992, the company established a second resort on Pangulasian Island, and in 1998, the third and largest Ten Knots resort on Lagen Island. The opening of the third resort coincides with the destruction of the Resort Pangulasian by fire. During this period several other tourism companies were developed, paving the way for tourism to become a thriving economic sector.

El Nido is an exhibition of Filipino geological and biological diversity. In recognition of the unique importance of the ecosystem, the Philippine government made all of the first El Nido territory to turtle shelter in 1984, then to the marine park in 1991, and finally in 1998, to a managed resource protected area.

Government

El Nido is governed by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, elected for a term of three years. The mayor is the chief executive and leads the municipal department in carrying out urban planning and improving public services. The City Council is responsible for creating city policy in the form of Procedures and Resolutions.

Seal

The municipal seal shows the silhouette of the El Nido region in the armor-shaped image. The famous marble and limestone cliffs symbolize swiftlet beds. Behind it is an oil rig, representing areas within the administrative boundaries found in oil and natural gas such as Malampaya Sound, which is 50 kilometers deep within its border, and the Cadlao Oil Field in Bacuit Bay. At the bottom of the picture is a rice field, with carabao head superimposed at the center, and on the other side, the sea, with fish and squid in the middle lies, representing agriculture and fisheries, two main industries of people.

Protected Area Status

Establishment

In 1984, the Ministry of Natural Resources, which then issued Administrative Order no. 518, built a 360 square kilometer maritime area in El Nido as a turtle shelter. In 1991, the rest of the Bacuit Gulf, including islands and islands, was proclaimed by the Philippine government as a marine reserve. A year later, pursuant to Administrative Order no. 14 Series 1992 from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, this area expanded even more. In 1998, its status was raised to a protected area, and that includes even the El Nido terrestrial ecosystem and partly from Taytay.

Area and scope

The so-called El Nido-Taytay Managed Resource Protected Area is the largest marine protection in the entire Philippines. Protected Area Status adjusts the El Nido area and some of its neighboring towns, Taytay, are among the eight priority locations in the country that require conservation. The Protected Area covers a total of 903.21 square kilometers, of which 40% are terrestrial and 60%.

The provincial government has mobilized its citizens to actively participate in various environmental conservation and protection programs, such as "Bantay Gubat" for forest protection, and "Bantay Dagat" for the preservation of marine life. Patrols in Protected Areas, especially in marine zones, are regularly conducted with the help of the World Wildlife Fund - the Philippines allocating funds to support such activities. Other logistical support is by the city government concerned. Palawan Council for Sustainable Management (PCSD) provides legal assistance during court proceedings against cases filed by the PAO Office.

As a protected area, the Philippine government needs about US $ 180,000 annually to protect and manage its natural resources. Tourists are encouraged to pay US $ 0.50 per day as a conservation fee during their visit at the City Tourism Office or the Office of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB), which is housed in the City Building at Calle Real. This is manifested in Resolution of PAMB No. 08 series 2000 of the National Integrated Protected Areas Program (NIPAP) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

El Nido, which is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the country, is protected for unique flora and fauna, and pure geological formations. These include:

  • limestone cliffs, swiftlet houses
  • 50 white sand beaches
  • 5 forest types (lowland rain forest found on land and islands such as Miniloc, Lagen and Pangulasian: semi-deciduous forests, limestone forests, coastal forests, and mangrove forests found mostly around large rivers and small rivers on the mainland)
  • 3 major marine habitats
  • 16 endemic and 10 endangered bird species (including Palawan hornbill, Palawan shama, Palawan tit, Palawan scops owl, and Palawan peacock)
  • 6 species of marine mammals endemic to Palawan (including dolphins and native dugongs)
  • Palawan shrew trees, bad smell Palawan, Palawan spiky rats, Palawan pangolin, and northern Palawan tree squirrel
  • 4 species of endangered sea turtles (hawksbill, olive repellent, leatherback turtle and green turtle)
  • 100 species of coral, 45 of which belong to the hard coral genus
  • 813 fish species

Places of interest

Seven Commandos Beach

The secluded beach is located on the mainland, but only accessible by water, due to the mountainous area.

Unlike most remote destinations in Bacuit Bay, there is a high-rise resort here besides the cottage and tent camping site right on the beach. There are quite a lot of small permanent structures throughout the Seven Commandments. It is also a popular stop on island hopping tours.

Simizu Island

A small island surrounded by clear waters of El Nido, rock formations and towering mountain scenery. Great place as a lunch spot for Island Tour A.

Bacuit Bay

Bacuit Bay is decorated with islands and small islands, most of which are inhabited. Its clear blue water is full of marine life. It is home to dugongs, turtles, manta rays, fish species, coral reefs, and occasional whale sharks. There are more than 30 dive sites ranging from six to over thirty meters.

Cadlao Island

Cadlao is the largest island in El Nido, occupying an area of 10.06 square kilometers. Among all the islands, it is the closest to the right city and has the highest peak that towers up to 640 meters above sea level. The beach is known for its white sand beaches, gently sloping seabeds, hidden lagoons, and natural paths through lush forests. One of these natural paths leads to the charming saltwater Makaamo Lagoon . Surrounded by mangrove forests, the best lagoon is enjoyed in silence at sunrise or sunset when the birds feed.

There are a number of beaches in Cadlao, including at Bocal Point , Natnat , and Paradise Beach on the south side of the island. Sabang Beach in the northeast offers good snorkeling opportunities, although some visitors may recognize it as one of the settings for the Scandinavian TV show Robinson Expedisjonen, the predecessor for Survivor >.

Dilumacad Island

Dilumacad Island has a beautiful white sand beach stretching up to about 300 meters which is ideal for picnic lunches during island excursions. There is an underwater tunnel on the north side and a coral reef at the southern end. The island is also called Helicopter Island because its limestone cliffs resemble helicopter shapes when viewed from a considerable distance. The island itself is small by land, but is rich in vegetation and has dense, dense rainforests, along with bare rocks, which seem to rise directly from the blue sea.

Pangulasian Island

Pangulasian has a 750 meters (2,460 feet) white sand in El Nido, which is ideal for sun bathing, sunset viewing, and other beach activities. Waters overlooking the coast are a cluster of coral reefs that make this area a great place for snorkeling and diving. The trail located in the middle of the island is a great place to observe birds, especially in the early mornings and evenings. The trail ends on the summit of the island and provides excellent 360-degree views of the Bacuit Bay and nearby islands.

Vigan Island

Located near Pangulasian Island, Vigan is also referred to as "Snake Island," due to natural sandspit (s shaped sand) that "snakes" offshore. Sandspit is visible only when the water is low. On both sides of the sandspit is a shallow swimming area.

Cudugnon Point

Cudugnon Point is an important anthropological site, where jewelry and pottery dating back to the Song dynasty (960-1279 CE) was produced. Anthropologists believe that cave dwellers come from Borneo, and travel across ancient land bridges connecting Palawan from Borneo. The cave slits are inhabited by granaries and insectivorous bats.

Matinloc Island

Matinloc Island, the longest slender island in El Nido, has a secret beach, which is a white sand beach enclosure at the corner of a sewer pit, which is not accessible by boat and is surrounded by steep stone walls. To achieve this, divers must swim underwater through a narrow gap in the stone wall. During the day, the sun shines through the opening, allowing light and shadow play on its limestone walls. The beach floor fell suddenly. According to local legend, the beach is inspired by the novel Alex Garland The Beach , written when the author was in El Nido.

Apart from Secret Beach , the island is also famous for its famous bga Kulasa Beach, a 100-meter-long white sand beach located in one of its small coves. The seabed that surrounds the coast decreases gradually and the water only becomes deeper after about 10 meters.

There are four dive sites around the island with one at the southern end of Matinloc being the deepest at 39 meters.

Pinasil Island

Pinasil Island has a cathedral-like cave that can be accessed by canoes and kayaks. The cool interior is illuminated at certain times by the sunlight that comes through the opening at its peak. This is one of the important sites for busyadors or bird's nest collectors.

The Aberawan River

Apart from some islands and beaches, tourists can also enjoy mangrove tours along the River Aberawan where they can watch the crows crowing among the mangrove trees at the mouth of the river.

Ille Cave

12,000 years ago, El Nido was inhabited by humans. Archaeologists found human and animal bones, pottery and even an 8,000-year-old cremation in Ille Cave. Ille is located in New Ibajay, 45 minutes drive from the city center, and frequented by tourists.

PoblaciÃÆ'³n (El Nido City proper)

Located around marble cliffs and towering limestone and green hills, the city is a thriving tourist center where most cottages, bars and souvenir shops can be found.

Marimegmeg Beach (Las Cabanas, Dos Cabanas)

Just one kilometer south of the Corong-Funnel, Marimegmeg beach is home to one of El Nido's first resorts. Called resort Las Cabanas, travelers start wrongly referring to Marimegmeg as beach Las Cabanas, and the name is stuck. There is a zip line between the beach and the nearby island that you can access through the path behind the beach.

Balay Tubay

A 90 year old house turns into a bar along Calle Real where local artists' paintings and handicrafts are on display. Every night, live music is done there. Originally owned by Sabas C. Robles, grandfather of Judge Sabas Robles Acosta, father of Andrei Ustares Acosta - the Palawanologist.

Nacpan Beach

A 4-kilometer (2.5 mile) stretch of powdery white sand and pure blue water is 45 minutes to an hour from downtown El Nido via tricycle. This rocky peninsula offers a distinctive view of the twin beaches after a brief vertical climb on the path, but the land was bought by private developers in 2016. Developers have plans to build a luxury resort on the grounds. The protests against sales and development have come in the form of squatters trying to reclaim the land. The fighting between the two sides has resulted in the property being watched 24 hours by armed security guards.

Duli Beach

El Nido surf spots. One of the mainland attractions that became famous from nacpan beach one day.. Very safe for the pure sand surfers, nice waves every september to line up and no waves almost during the summer season.. Almost the same in nacpan but Duli is not busy or crowded.
