Inclusive Recreation

Inclusive recreation , also known as adaptive or accessible recreation, is a concept in which persons with disabilities are given the opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Through the use of activity modification and auxiliary technology, athletes or participants in sports or other recreational activities may play with their non-disabled counterparts. The Boy Scouts of America, for example, has about 100,000 physically or mentally disabled members across the United States.

Adaptive methods

Activity modifications

Activity change is a change made to a game or activity that allows all players to have equal or more equal opportunity to do well. One example of activity modification is the basketball wheel game, where players use wheelchairs. The inability of players to run is not a factor in how well they play.

Tools

Devices are any machines or equipment used to equate the playing field in a mixed-ability competition, or to allow a participant to participate who can not do so without the benefit. A good tool example is a pool lift that lowers a non-ambulatory swimmer into the pool, and a standing frame that allows wheelchair users to stand while playing the ball. Many municipalities in the US use adaptive recreation as a way to meet the requirements of the American Disability Act (ADA), particularly its share that deals with public services. Governments are required by ADA law to provide reasonable accommodation for persons with disabilities to enable them to participate in sports and recreation programs.

3. The sandy beaches and snow-covered gardens are accessible from wheelchairs with specially designed wide wheels. Some facilities lease it to users, like this example in the Netherlands 4. Some activities require some modifications. Here, wheelchair users participate in flying gliders as pilots, at Portmoak Airfield, Scotlandwell, Scotland, UK.

Programs and models

Some organizations have the means to create large programs for many participants in an activity. A plan to create an inclusive recreation can include staff training on inclusive practice, universal purchase or construction of equipment, and tracking success and addressing the need for further accessibility when they arise. Various concepts and inclusion models exist, which may focus on the content of inclusive recreational programs, or in the inclusion process itself. These include the Cincinnati Model for Inclusion, Supportive Recreation Support Model (SRI), the Shared Service delivery model (TWP), and the CITI Model, among many others.

Staff training is an important step in managing the success of the inclusive recreation program. Lack of awareness on the part of staff can have a negative impact on recreational participants; for example, with the incorrect assumption that a person with visual impairment needs to be pronounced in a loud and slow voice can cause the participants to break away from the activity. Training recommendations may include both negative attitudes and behaviors through "personal contact and interaction", by working with persons with disabilities. Staff are encouraged to promote "self-determination" among recreational participants, which "improves learning and a person's sense of competence".

Therapeutic recreation

Therapeutic recreation is intended to help patients adapt to chronic disabling conditions. Certified therapeutic recreation specialists use their specialized training, along with professional standards, to develop programs that can accommodate the patient's specific needs. Therapeutic recreation may be part of a school-specific education program, or may be part of a hospital, community, or organization program.
