History
Barako takes its name from the Spanish word for wild boar, varraco , who likes to eat in leaves and fruit of plants.
The first barako tree was a piece of Brazil planted in the 1800s in Barangay Pinagtung-Ulan, Lipa City, Batangas by the Willies and Cora Macasaet families.l Barako coffee has a taste which is strong, flavor, and has a distinctive aroma. All the coffee grown in Batangas is generally called barako .
In the 1880s, the coffee industry in the Philippines collapsed because of infestations dubbed "Rusty Coffee" and fierce competition from coffee farmers in South America and Vietnam. This leads the farmers to switch to other crops, which have threatened the variety with extinction.

Comparison with other coffee varieties
Barako ( C. liberica ) is not a common coffee variety, accounting for less than 1% of commercially grown coffee, although it is abundant in Southeast Asia especially in the Philippines. It is also produced in Malaysia, although usually not exported because most manufacturers operate small farms and sell locally and to the tourist market. It has the largest leaves and beans of all coffee varieties.
The shape of the beans is not symmetrical, unique among the four remaining commercial species ( arabica , robusta ââem> , excelsa and liberica ). One side is lower than the other, creating a distinctive "point" or hook at the bottom. The groove in the middle is generally serrated and not straight as in other coffee species. Coffee fruit grows on trees that reach 30 'high, and harvest is usually done by accessing fruit using stairs. It's said to be superior to Robusta, and most Filipino coffee drinkers prefer barako to Arabica. Arabica -
