Motion graphics are pieces of digital or animated recordings that create the illusion of motion or rotation, and are usually combined with audio for use in multimedia projects. Motion graphics are typically displayed via electronic media technology, but can also be displayed through manual powered technologies (eg thaumatrope, phenakistoscope, stroboscope, zoetrope, praxinoscope, flip book). This term distinguishes the still graph from the image with the appearance of the transformation over time, without specifying its shape too much. While any form of experimental or abstract animation can be called motion graph, this term more explicitly refers to commercial applications of animation and effects to video, movie, TV, and interactive applications.

Video Motion graphics

Cakupan istilah

Motion graphics goes beyond the most commonly used methods of framing by picture frame and animation. Motion graphics can be distinguished from typical animations because they are not too influenced by characters or based on stories and often represent abstract forms of animation such as logos or logo elements.

History of the term

Since there is no universally accepted definition of graphical motion, the official beginning of the art form is debatable. There are presentations that can be classified as motion charts as early as the 1800s. Michael Betancourt wrote the first in an in-depth history survey of the field, citing his foundations in historical music and abstract films of 1920 by Walther Ruttmann, Hans Richter, Viking Eggeling and Oskar Fischinger.

The history of motion graphics is closely related to the history of Computer Graphics because the new developments of computer-generated graphs lead to the wider use of motion designs that are not based on optical animation films. The term motion graphics comes with digital video editing in computing, perhaps to follow newer technologies. The graph for television was originally referred to as the Broadcast Design.

One of the first uses of the term "motion graphics" was by animator John Whitney, who in 1960 founded a company called Motion Graphics Inc.

Saul Bass is a pioneer in the development of a series of movie titles. His work included the sequence of titles for popular films such as The Man With The Golden Arm (1955), Vertigo (1958), Anatomy of Killing (1959 ), North by Northwest (1959), Psycho (1960), and Advise & amp; Approval (1962). The design is simple, but it effectively communicates the movie's atmosphere.

Computer generated motion graphics

Before computers were widely available, graphics were costly and time-consuming, restricting their use to film production and high-budget television production. Computers began to be used as early as the late 1960s because super computers were able to present raw graphics. John Whitney and Charles Csuri can be regarded as early pioneers of computer-assisted animation.

In the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, the expensive exclusive graphics systems such as those from UK-based Quantel were quite commonplace on many television stations. Quantel Workstations like Hal, Henry, Harry, Mirage and Paintbox are the standard graphics of the broadcast at the time. Many other real time graphics systems are used such as Ampex ADO, Abekas and K-Scope for direct digital video effects. The special early 3D computer system was also developed specifically for broadcast such as Bosch FGS-4000 used in music video for Dire Straits Money for Nothing (song). The emergence of more powerful desktop computers running Photoshop in the mid-90s drastically lowered the cost of producing digital graphics. By reducing the cost of making motion graphics on computers, the discipline has seen wider usage. With the availability of desktop programs such as Adobe After Effects, Discreet Combustion, and Apple Motion, motion graphics are becoming increasingly accessible. Modern character generators (CG) from Aston Broadcast Systems and Chyron Corporation include motion graphs.

The term "motion graphics" was popularized by Trish and Chris Meyer's book on the use of Adobe After Effects, titled Creating Motion Graphics . This is the beginning of a desktop application that specializes in video production, but not editing or 3D programs. These new programs are collected together with special effects, compositing, and color correction toolset, and mainly come between editing and 3D in the production process. This "in between" the idea of motion graphics and the resulting animation style is why it is sometimes referred to as 2.5D.

Motion graphics continues to evolve as an art form by combining sweeping camera lines and 3D elements. Maxon's CINEMA 4D, plugins like MoGraph and Adobe After Effects. Despite their relative complexity, Autodesk Maya and 3D Studio Max are widely used for animation and graphics motion design, such as Maya and 3D Studio that use a node-based particle system generator similar to the Cinema 4D Thinking Particle plugin. There are also several other packages in the Open Source panorama, which get more features and experts to use in the graphics movement workflow, while Blender integrates several functions of its commercial partners.

Many motion graphics animators learn some 3D graphics packages to use according to the power of each program. Although many trends in motion graphics tend to be based on particular software capabilities, this software is only a broadcast designer tool using while bringing vision to life.

Leaning heavily from techniques such as collage or pastiche, motion graphics has begun to integrate many traditional animation techniques as well, including stop-motion animation, cel animation or a combination of both.

Particle system

One of the most popular motion graphics tools is the particle system: motion graphics technology used to produce multiple animation elements. This type of animation is usually referred to as procedural animation. A particle system is available as a plug-in, as a stand-alone application, or incorporated as an integrated part of the graphics motion pack. Particles are dots in 3-D or 2-D spaces that can be represented by various stations and animated objects such as light balls, video clips, or text options, to name a few. The particles are generated by particle emitters and can be emitted in small quantities or in the thousands, depending on the project. Among other things, the particle emitter can be a point, line, grid, field or object such as a box or a ball, although it can also use a special object to serve the emitter, such as a logo, which for example, can explode, melt, or turn into sand blowing. The popular particle system for motion graphics is special by Trapcode.

Other examples of individual particles include opaque balls that can be used in large quantities to create smoke or fog and video clips from someone who can be duplicated to create a crowd scene. Particles can be emitted as a single item, although usually used in large quantities, such as when making smoke or rain. They are controlled by direction force, simulated wind and gravity, objects designed to attract or repel them. Other controlled attributes may include things like change of color, size, or transparency. Depending on the system, one can also combine several simultaneous triggers, such as when simulating an explosion that combines fire, smoke and flying debris. In a sophisticated 3-D system, particles can be used to control animated articulation characters, examples that can be recognized as warriors in the order of Lord of the Rings movie battles.

Animation

Motion graphics project elements can be animated in various ways, depending on the capabilities of the software. These elements may be in the form of art, text, photos, and video clips, to name a few. The most popular form of animation is keyframing, where the properties of an object can be determined at certain points in time by assigning a series of keyframes so that the properties of the object can be automatically changed (or tweened) within the frame between the main frames. Another method involves a behavioral system as found in Apple Motion that controls these changes by simulating natural forces without requiring more rigid but precise keyframing methods. Yet other methods involve the use of formulas or scripts, such as expression functions in Adobe After Effects or ActionScript creation in Adobe Flash. Computers are able to calculate and shuffle changes in imagery to create the illusion of motion and transformation. Computer animation can use less information space (computer memory) by tweening automatically, a rendering process of changing keys of an image at a specified or computed time. Pose or key frame is usually referred to as the main frame or low CP. Adobe Flash uses tweening computer animation as well as frame-by-frame animations and videos. Stop motion graphics is the oldest motion graphics type that has given birth to cinema, it gives a unique effect on the video.

Movement design and digital compositing software package

Because motion design is created using images and video sequences, the supplementary tool is a 3d software package. Cinema 4D is widely used for intuitive interfaces, layered export for Adobe After Effects, and additional MoGraph modules, but there are other software packages as well. Such packets can produce an image or video sequence with an alpha channel, which stores all transparency information.

Motion design applications include Adobe After Effects, Eyeon Fusion, Nuke, Autodesk Combustion, Apple Motion, Max/MSP, VJ Programs, Micro Anime Studio Smith Software, Adobe Flash, and Natron. 3D programs used in motion graphics include Maxon Cinema 4D, Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya, NewTek Lightwave, e-on Vue Infinite and Blender. Motion graphics plug-ins include Magic Bullet, Red Giant Software and The Foundry Visionmongers.
