History

Fishing companies from England and Wales arrived at what is now Northern Bay in the early half of the 18th century. In 1768, immigrants from England and Ireland had settled on the "North Coast" of Conception Bay, including Northern Bay. [2]

On September 17, 1775, a ship carrying 400 passengers crashed somewhere near Northern Bay now. [3] The crash was undoubtedly the result of the Newfoundland Hurricane of 1775 which remains one of the worst natural disasters - if not the worst - ever to occur in Newfoundland and Labrador in history.

In 1836, a Roman Catholic church (Corpus Christi Parish) was established in Northern Bay. The United Church is also in the community. The city has three graves.

One of the first settler communities was William Hogan, an Irish merchant.

Since the 19th century, the Northern Bay population has remained relatively constant with some outbound migrations but the rate of birth remains. The economy is largely based on fisheries and subsistence agriculture throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.

A horse named after the area took part in the British National Grand Stepechechase 1987, completing the race in ninth place

Folklore

Myths, legends, and folklore used to be very important in rural Newfoundland, but today is more than just entertainment.

One folk tale that continues in the culture of Northern Bay and its surrounding community is "Hannah's Tolt". The following is from the old Newfoundland magazine Decks Wash (V.9, No.6, Dec.1980):

"The local word for the rocky hill is 'tolt' and there is an interesting story about the origin of Hannah Tolt, located inland from Northern Bay near Welsh's Pond.It probably happened in the 1920s [or] years 1930s At the end of autumn when a crowd of women were in a berry-picking forest, Hannah Milley and her daughter must have been separated from the main group of women when a snowstorm suddenly broke. They never made it back to society. found the bodies, but about 17 years later, a man named Lewis Crummey was in a firewood forest hunting and he found two corpses and their rusty berry bucket down at the base of a tolt, later dubbed Hannah's Tolt >. Economy and society today

Demographics

The population of the population in 1836 was 282. [4] Today's figures do not deviate from it, although it is actually more difficult to have a reliable figure for the Northern Bay population or other cities in rural Newfoundland today because of the many out-migration and seasonal jobs outside provinces produce an unpredictable rate of return.

Economy

The local economy is based on fisheries, fish and crab processing factories in nearby communities, several local small businesses, and Northern Bay Sands which is a provincial park until privatization in 1997. Unemployment is high but due to the 1992 cod moratorium.

Education

To date, Northern Bay has a school that serves all the neighboring communities of Caplin Cove via Kingston. Corpus Christi Elementary School and High School in Northern Bay caters to most of the Roman Catholic students in the area and Jackson Walsh Elementary and High School near Western Bay is an interfaith school. The 1997 referendum that ended denominational education in Newfoundland and Labrador public schools meant that schools in Northern Bay (renamed North Shore Collegiate) became secondary schools for all students in the area, and Jackson Walsh (renamed Cabot Academy). ) will be the primary school serving the area.

In 2002, North Shore Collegiate closed as a result of a declining student population. The high school closure means that all students from grades 7 to 12 from Northern Bay and the surrounding community must go to one of the Old Perlican in the north or Carbonear farther south.

The closure of the school has left an indelible impression on local life, especially as it is also a community meeting center and a symbol of growth and autonomy for not only Northern Bay but the entire North Shore region.

Tourism

This community is a popular tourist site in summer because of Northern Bay Sands. The park and camp are also the annual "Beach Fest" venues, a daylong concert featuring local and provincial music performances. Close to the main centers on the Avalon Peninsula such as St. John's, Carbonear, and Bay Roberts have made Northern Bay a very famous summer vacation spot. As a result of this, there is a renewed interest in cabin ownership in the area and the values of real estate have increased slightly in recent years.

Politics

Communities are not included as municipalities but their citizens are active in local organizations such as school boards, church groups or the North Shore District Fire Department.

Northern Bay is in the province riding Trinity-Bay de Verde, represented by Progressive Conservative MHA Charlene Johnson and Avalon's federal electoral district represented by Liberal MP Scott Andrews.
