A patty , in American, Canadian, South African, Australian, and New Zealand, is a flattened, usually rounded, groundbreaking dish or meat serving. The meat is compacted and shaped, cooked, and served. Bread can be eaten with knives and forks on a plate like Salisbury steak, but usually served in a kind of sandwich called "burger", or hamburger if the patty is made from ground meat. Patty itself can also be called burger , both served in sandwiches, especially in England and Ireland, where the term "patty" is rarely used.
Similar shaped meat cakes that are not made from ground meat can also be called "burgers": "turkey burgers" or "fishburgers" can be made from mechanically reshaped meats. Sometimes burgers are breaded. The veggie burger buns are made without meat, usually soybeans, but also often other beans and sometimes from other mixed vegetables.
In Ireland, traditional chippers often serve burgers dough (beef-based patty dipped in batter and fried) or spice burgers (savory patty made with meat and spice recipes). It is presented in a durable paper bag and eaten by hand.
In India, a patty might refer to vegetarian (eg, potatoes) or non-vegetarian (chicken, meat, etc.), or to sweet or savory puff pastry that is common street food in many parts of the country.

Shape
With mass-produced patty, it is not uncommon to find them in seemingly abnormal shapes or wavy perimeters. This lump-like groove is caused by the machine that forms the patties. They are used in production to keep them in sync, so they will not fall off the assembly line, and can be manipulated by various machines. In other patty boxes, a small prick can be seen on the top and bottom of the patty. These punctures exist for the same reason.
