Slowly playing children is a common sign seen in American cities urging motorists to slow down. The signs are visible around the area where children often come, such as playgrounds and schools. They are almost always marked with the words "Slow Children At Play" and the image of a child running. They sometimes have speed limits posted on them.

Sometimes the locals set up impromptu signs after a child is hit by a vehicle. Signs often provide enough food for humor at the expense of slow (mentally handicapped) children. Some municipalities will not post the "Children on Play" sign. The Montgomery County website, Maryland Department of Transportation states:

The "Children on Play" sign is not approved for use by "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices", the national standard for traffic control signs. The generic messages of these signs do not direct the attention of enough riders because motorists are generally aware of the possibility of increasing children playing in adjacent courtyards and sidewalks as they drive on every residential street.

"Kids on Play" sign is inappropriate for a public road because they suggest that play on the street is acceptable behavior, but it is not. In addition, the installation of this mark can cause parents and children to believe they have an additional level of protection not provided by these signs.
