History Edit
The reservoir was built in 1982 with the construction of a Sugarcane Dam north of Northtailtail Creek, a tributary of the North Fork American River, as part of the South Central Project Unit of South Auburn-Folsom. Although Pine Dam Sugar is funded through the Central Valley Project, it has never been integrated into the project operationally, as it is intended to work with the never-ending Auburn Dam. According to the US Reclamation Bureau (USBR), during the California drought of 1987-1992, the reservoir was functioning well, filling and spilling and fulfilling its water obligations every year, but one year.
In 2003, the Foresthill community purchased Pine Sugar Reservoir, Sugar Pine Sugar, and its streaming system from USBR for $ 3.1 million. In 2012, the Foresthill Public Utility District provides water for 1,875 homes and 75 businesses in and around Foresthill.
