First First generation (2002-2014)
In January 2001, Volvo outperformed Adventure Concept Car at the North American International Auto Show, to gauge reaction to styling and upcoming SUV features. In November 2001, Volvo released a teaser image showing the frontal style of the production version, named XC90. Known as the first Volvo SUV model, the XC90 styling reminds this concept. In January 2002, full XC90 disclosure took place, at the North American International Auto Show. Production began in August 2002, after the Volvo's traditional mid-year closure, with the first XC90 out of the Torslanda plant in Sweden.
At the North American launch for the 2003 model year, the XC90 was presented with a choice of two trim levels, 2.5 T and T6. 2.5 T is an entry-level version and offers a 2.5-liter T5 turbocharged inline-five engine, producing 208 hp (155 kW) and 236 pounds (320 N) mated to Aisin together developed a five-speed automatic AW55-50/51 . The T6 offers 2.9 liter B6294T twin-turbocharged inline-six with 268 hp (200 kW) and 280 lb ft (380 N) mated to GM-sourced, Volvo-modified four-speed < i> 4T65EV/GT automatically. While the 2.5T comes standard with front-wheel drive, the Haldex Traction all-wheel drive (AWD) system is optional. T6 is only offered with AWD system.
Yamaha V8 engine was added in 2005. Volvo B8444S 4.4-liter engine produces 288 hp (215 kW) for some of the first models which later improved to 311 hp (232 kW) and 325 lb of torque? Ft (441Ã, N? M). Volvo sold more than 40,000 units of XC90 in North America that year.
The XC90 won the North American Cars of the Year and the Sport Magazine Trend Sport/Utility of the Year for 2003.
Jeremy Clarkson's former owner of Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson has owned three of these vehicles, and claims that they were designed by someone who definitely has a child because of its practicality.

Security
The front of the Volvo XC90 is designed to absorb the frontal impact and also deflects pedestrians to the hood of the vehicle rather than under the vehicle. Volvo has patented a unique frontal structure featuring a crumple zone, and a predetermined position for the engine and other ancillary equipment during a frontal collision.
The roof of XC90 is reinforced with very high-strength steel to help prevent the collapse of passenger cavities in case of roll-over. The Volvo system is marketed as ROPS, and is strongly associated with Roll Stability Control (RSC), electronic stability control (DSTC), and Volvo SIPS systems to prevent and ultimately minimize crash strength. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration measures the risk of roll-over from 2013 XC90 as 17.9%. Max. the sideway push is 0.77g.
The XC90 rear structure has been designed to absorb impact energy, with occupants also protected by the whiplash protection system. Marketed as WHIPS, the system packs the occupants during rear collisions.
The Highway Safety Insurance Agency honors Volvo XC90 for their top Safety Awards. XC90 gets the highest rating "II" in front, side, rear and roof strength tests and has Electronic Stability Control as standard equipment to receive awards.
Stability Controls The first industry roll was first introduced at XC90 in 2003.
At the end of July 2007, Volvo Car Corp. announced the recall of 42,211 models of the 2005 XC90s for short-battery and fire-battery short-circuit risks. The vehicle was manufactured at the Swedish Torslanda Factory between June 7, 2004, and May 13, 2005. The withdrawal is valid only for cars in the US and Canada. There are no reports of short circuit in the vehicle.

Security
Second Generation Volvo XC90 SUV has a sophisticated and technologically advanced advanced security package (IntelliSafe), including two of the world's first safety technologies: Run-off-road protection packages and automatic brakes at the intersection. This Volvo safety feature means that the Second Generation Volvo XC90 is, by 2015, the safest SUV in the world.
Volvo XC90 security systems include:
- Run-off-road protection package . In a run-off-road scenario, the new Volvo XC90 detects what's happening and the front seat belt is tightened to keep passengers in position. To help prevent spinal cord injury, the energy absorbing function between the seat and seat frame provides a cushion of vertical strength that can arise when the car meets with a hard landing in the field.
- City Security with auto brakes at the intersection . The XC90 is the world's first car with technology featuring automatic braking if the driver spins in front of an oncoming car. This is a common scenario on busy city crossings as well as on highways, where speed limits are higher.
- IntelliSafe with City Security has been the umbrella name for all the automatic Volvo Cars collision avoidance functions, which are standard equipment in the new XC90. This equipment now includes vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in front of the car during the day and night.
- Support Cruise Adaptive Cruise Assistance with Pilot Assist allows automotive and semi-autonomous driving drivers to be safe and comfortable by automatically following the vehicle up front in stop-and-go traffic. Acceleration, braking and now steering is automatically controlled. On March 18, 2018, a woman named Elaine Herzberg was killed by Uber Volvo XC90 while the vehicle runs control hardware and self-drive Uber mode itself, Uber's XC90 does not include Volvo's advanced driver assistance system itself. (See Death of Elaine Herzberg).
In the midst of the Australian launch of the vehicle in August 2015, the All-New 2016 XC90 is labeled by a major media source as an SUV that will be the safest car in Australia. The Volvo brand has also made claims that "By 2020, no one will be seriously injured or killed in the new Volvo."
EURONCAP is tested in 2015 an XC90 (model year 2016), a 5-door SUV with standard equipment. EuroNCAP considers the XC90 model as the best overall player. NHTSA is currently only listed for rollover.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also tests XC90, and presents the following results (ratings from 'poor' to 'good'):
- 1 vehicle structure rated "Good"
- 2 power-to-weight ratio: 5.18
- 3
head/head holder geometry rated "Good"
With more than 50,000 vehicles sold in the UK in 2018, no driver or passenger is listed dead.
T8
The plug-in version of X8 plug-in T8 is based on the technology used in Volvo V60 PHEV. Batteries located at the center of the vehicle can be charged using an electric vehicle charger and can also store energy obtained with a regenerative brake. Volvo said that the XC90 T8 does not sacrifice passengers or cargo space to accommodate hybrid equipment. However, the tank capacity was reduced to 50à L, L (13.2 gal AS, 11.0Ã, à ± gal) and no spare tire.
The vehicle emits 49 g/km of CO2 and has an overall power range of 43 km (27 mi) under the New European Driving Cycle. Normal steering is done in the default hybrid mode, but the driver can press a button to switch to a mode that uses only electricity, with zero emission steering. Under the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) test, the XC90 T8 has an electric range of 14 mi (23 km), with some gasoline consumption (0.1 gal/100 mi), so the actual all-electric range is rated between 0 and 13Ã, mi (0 to 21 km).
The EPA, under its five-cycle test, assesses the 2016 model of XC90 T8 energy consumption in an all-electric mode at 58 kWh per 100 miles, which translates into a combined city/highway fuel economy of 53 miles per gallon of gas equivalent (MPG -e) (4.4 L/100 km, 64 mpg -imp equivalent gasoline). When powered up only by gasoline engines, the official EPA combined economy/highway economy is 25 mpg -US (9.4 L/100 km; 30 mpg -imp ).
XC90 T8 PHEV shipments began in the United States in August 2015. Sales in Europe reached 2,653 units by 2015. Cumulative sales in the US totaled 488 units by February 2016. According to Volvo, sales of plug-in variants represent 20% of Volvo XC90's global sales on mid-March 2016.
