Characteristics

Lake Management Unit The Lake County Department of Health provides a 2003 Wooster Lake Summary depicting Wooster as a glacial, non-public (private) lake covering about 98.9 hectares with a 2.03-mile coastline. It is reported to have a maximum depth of 29.8 'and an average depth of 16.3', the deepest 4th (average) of inland and private lakes in Lake County, Illinois. This is part of the Fish Lake drainage in the Fox River basin. The Fish Lake Drain flows from Fish Lake to Fischer Lake, then to Wooster. Water leaves Wooster by a tributary along the northern coastline and flows into Duck Lake, eventually flowing into the Fox River.

Though private lakes have significant depths, in February 2005, Lake Management - a division of the County Health Department of Medicine - provides slide deck presentation highlighting by the moon the total phosphorus level (TP) recorded as spilling over Lake Wooster. During significant rain events (as in June 2004), 20.5 pounds (9.3 kg) of phosphorus per day was recorded as spilled at just this one measured site.

History

As reported by Diana Dretske at the Lake County Historical Museum, Jacob L. Beilhart founded a communitarian group called the Spirit Fruit Society on the shore of Lake Wooster, after purchasing a 90-acre channel known as Dahlziel Farm in 1905. About a dozen established members of the Spirit Fruit Society moved with Beilhart to Illinois, along with several new members. Over the next two years, the community built a spacious house and then a large warehouse entirely by hand. The 2 storey residence has 32 rooms, a full cellar, and modern (for time) comfort. The dining room holds up to 100 people. The community continues to live peacefully in Ingleside for several years. They provided for themselves from what came to be known as the "Spirit Fruit Farm", opening fields and shrines for visitors, and producing bulletins. Beilhart continues to talk with groups in Chicago promoting the ideals of society.

In November 1908, Beilhart became ill with acute appendicitis. Despite the attention of a surgeon who performed appendectomy, he developed peritonitis and died three days later. In keeping with the public belief in simplicity, he is buried in a simple coffin in an unmarked grave overlooking Lake Wooster. None of the remaining buildings, which had been covered by the construction of housing, though Beilhart's tomb remained in a vague corner of the tract.

In 2017, in a dispute noted the association declaration, the title of the lake property being listed, and recorded village regulations filed in the Lake County Recorder of Deeds Office, which claims the Wooster Lake property is restricted, creating disputes over the use of lake law.
