The city of Houston and the metropolitan area of ââHouston has a rich sporting culture and active area residents in many spectators and sports participants. Attendees attended the event including teams from four major professional sports teams and college sports. The participants enjoyed the activities of running in the Memorial Park to sail in Galveston Bay and Clear Lake. Former team
Houston is home to a dead Komet WNBA from 1997 to 2008. Comets have won 4 WNBA Championships in a row, which is still the biggest championship of any sports team in Houston, and the biggest in Texas.
AFL/NFL Oilers called Houston home from 1960 to 1997 before the team moved to Tennessee and became the Titans. Oilers also provided the city with two AFL championships in 1960 and 1961, before the merger with the NFL.
Houston Eros of the American Hockey League was in Houston from 1994 to 2013 when they were moved to become Iowa Wild.
Houston Eros of the World Hockey Association played in Houston from 1972 to 1978 until the WHA was disbanded. They won the Avco World Cup as the WHA champion in 1974 and 1975.
Houston has three teams in World TeamTennis: The E-Z Riders in 1974, Astro-Knots in 1982 and 1983, and Wranglers from 2005 to 2007.
The Houston Scrap Yard Dawgs of National Pro Fastpitch from 2016 to 2017 when the team was terminated by the NPF after they became NPF champions in 2017.
College sports
Four Division I college athletic programs play within the city of Houston, and the fifth is located in a metropolitan area. The new venue, TDECU Stadium, opened in 2014 on the campus of the University of Houston at the former Robertson Stadium. Other campus sport facilities in Houston are Hofheinz Pavilion and Rice Stadium.
Annual event
Houston organizes annual sporting events like the PGA Tour's Shell Houston Open, the Texas Bowl football college, and the Houston College Classic baseball college. Since 1971, two NCAA football teams of Division I FBS Houston, Rice Owls and Houston Cougars have been dealing in the annual Bayou Bucket Classic. Since 1985, Texas Southern Tigers and Prairie View A & amp; M Panthers competes in the annual Labor Day Classic.
Every June since 2012, the US national rugby team has played an international match against Europe's top teams at BBVA Compass Stadium, breaking the attendance record for rugby matches in the US. The US Men's Clay Championship, the ATP Tour 250 World Tournament, has been held in Houston since 2001
From 1998 to 2001, the CART World Series held a Grand Prix of Houston car race in downtown streets. CART's successor series, Champ Car, revived the race for 2006 and 2007 on the streets around Reliant Park. The race was stopped again in 2008, after the Champ Car merger with IndyCar Series rivals. The Grand Prix of Houston returns for the 2013 season. In motorcycles, Astrodome held an AMA Supercross Championship round from 1974 to 2003 and the NRG Stadium since 2003.
Several annual sporting events are no longer held in Houston. The Virginia Slims of Houston is a women's tennis tournament held from 1970 to 1995 as part of the WTA Tour. The last official event of the LPGA golf season, the LPGA Tour Championship, was held in Houston in 2009, but moved to Orlando, Florida in 2010.
