Composition
The U2 singer, Bono, came up with the idea for the song after reading Rushdie's novel script. In the novel, the fictional character Ormus Cama wrote the lyrics as a lament for his lover, Vina Apsara. U2 uses these lyrics almost word per word, but omits the following lines:
