Ikhtisar
International and independent, The Thornton-Donovan School is now an accredited New York State high school that educates over 175 students in K-12 classes each year. On May 25, 2005, the students planted two flowering trees at the end of the Neglecting Circle and at Lester Place and Beechmont Lake as a gift to the New Rochelle city of New York.
The school offers a swimming pool, outdoor playset, woodchips, driveways, over thirty live trees, a large lawn, basketball/tennis/family courts, three buildings, a parking lot/Hacky Sack arena, and a warehouse for arts and crafts only used during the summer.
Renovation 2008-2009
During early 2008, plans are being made to expand and level the pitch together by building a new basketball court. A proposal for renovation was sent to the New Rochelle Development Planning Board on June 24. The proposal states that the field will be assessed, ten irrigation sprinklers will be installed, the basketball court will be separated and moved to allow more space, a ten-foot chain fence will cover a new court, and twenty trees must be removed during the process. Principal Douglas Fleming has referred to the final product as the Field of Dreams.
Summer Challenge Program
In summer, schools also run summer camp programs, in 46 consecutive years in summer 2014. Children aged 3-14 are allowed to join the program. Children are divided into two divisions: Play School (3-7 years) and Sports Fitness (7-14 years). They participate in various sports. Activities include: tennis, softball, hockey, swimming, arts and crafts, karate, dance, basketball, soccer, trampoline, capture flags, outdoor playset, watermelons, and kick balls. The older group is also taken to the bowling alley in the Bronx every Friday, where the children have a chance to eat.
