History

Growth during the first 22 years of Airborne was slow. Progress comes slowly and the competition becomes stiff. But in 1968, the airline began to experience some changes. To begin with, Airborne of California joins Pacific Air Freight of Seattle. The airline moved its headquarters there and changed its name to Airborne Freight Corporation.

  • 1980: The airline changed its name to Airborne Express. After purchasing the Midwest Air Charter, Airborne Express made history by purchasing Clinton Air Force Base in Wilmington and became the first airline in history to own and operate the airport. A number of NAMC YS-11 twin-turboprop twin-turbine delivery converters are purchased.
  • 1988: Airborne begins offering same day delivery after purchasing Sky Courier (now DHL SameDay).
  • 1991: Airborne received awards from three major companies, including Volvo, and in 1992, the airline introduced Flight-Ready SM, mail and prepaid post package system.
  • 1993: Airborne introduces Air Logistics System (ALS), which provides Airborne with warehousing and distribution services.
  • 1994: Airborne opens Ocean Services Division, and ALS established the first new film distribution program for Hollywood since 1944. In addition, the relationship was built with Vietnam.
  • 1995: Airborne opens second runway in Wilmington, and a Boeing 767 jet is added to the fleet. The Air Cross Alliance Group takes care of many departments for the company.
  • 1996: Airborne shares triple, which would then be two for a stock split in February 1998. Formed that year was Airborne Brokerage Services.
  • 1998: Air Traffic is on the Fortune 500 list for the first time. The first Airborne of the total 30 Boeing 767 arrived in Wilmington, and the airline was awarded by the Business Consumer Guide.
  • 1999: Airborne @ Home, an alliance with the United States Post Office, was formed.
  • 2000: Carl Donaway becomes the company's new president, causing many managerial changes. Also that year, Airborne started ground service for the first time in its history.
  • 2001: Airborne Express launches Land Delivery Service and 10:30 Shipping Service. Airborne.com launched its own services, including Small Business Center and Airborne eCourier.
  • August 14, 2003: Air shareholders approve the acquisition of Airborne, Inc. by DHL from Brussels, Belgium. DHL 100% owned by Deutsche Post World Net. The acquisition becomes effective the next day. DHL retains ownership of Airborne's ground operations and separates its operations as ABX Air, Inc.
  • November 10, 2008: DHL global shipping company announces that it has cut 9,500 jobs for halting air and ground operations in the United States. DHL says DHL Express will continue to operate between the United States and other countries. But the company said it dropped "air-only" ground and air services in the United States on January 30 "to minimize future uncertainty". The DHL 9,500 job cuts were above the 5,400 job cuts announced earlier this year. After losing this job, between 3,000 and 4,000 employees will remain in US DHL operations, the company said. The company also said it had closed all the land hubs and reduced the number of stations to 103 from 412.
