Crane Flat Campground , an altitude of 6,200 feet (1,900 m), is located in Yosemite National Park, 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Yosemite Valley. Of all the camps outside Yosemite Valley, Crane Flat is the closest to the Valley in terms of mileage and travel time (20 minutes). The campsite is right off the road. Each camp contains a fire ring, a picnic table, and a food locker, and near the bathroom with drinking water and a watered-down toilet.
Reservations are required to stay at Crane Flat. Crane Flat is one of the busier campsites outside the Valley, but a bit more noisy than in the Valley. There are a total of 271 campsites in 5 different driving rounds to choose from. The plains of Derek Flat are very similar to camping in the Valley despite its higher altitudes. Trees surround and tower over campsites that make way for a very shady campground environment.
Directly outside the camp entrances are the Crane Flat Gas Station and Store. The campground is about 100 meters from three street branches: HWY 120W to San Francisco, HWY 120E to Tioga Road, Big Oak Flat Road to Yosemite Valley.
In winter, the campground is converted into a Snow Play Area. Parking in the winter for this snow play area is very limited.
