The Devil's Tramping Ground is a camping spot located in the woods near the Harper Junction area in Bear Creek, North Carolina. This has been the subject of a persistent legend and local knowledge, which often alleges that Satan's "traces" and haunt a barren loop in which nothing should grow. This has often been noted on the list of unusual place names.

Knowledge

The story of the ring is well known in the local community. This included the loss of the remaining items in the ring last night, the yipping and howling dogs, did not want to approach it, and strange events occurred to those brave enough to spend the night within its boundaries. It has been alleged that nothing has grown in a 40-foot ring for a hundred years. Legend has it that this is where the devil himself can rise from the fiery depths of hell, and come to earth. It is here that the devil should go round and round on certain nights and bring his wickedness into this world.

John William Harden (1903-1985) of Greensboro, N.C., journalist, editor of the newspaper, author and advisor to North Carolina Governors and textile executives, says this about the Devil's Tramp Land:

The Chatham natives said... that Satan went there to walk around when he thought of new ways to cause trouble for humanity. There, sometimes during the dark night, His Excellency the Underworld of Evil quietly explores the empty circle - thinking, planning, and plotting against the good, and for the sake of error. I have heard that the stewardesses spend the night there and wake up with their tent a few miles away. There are also some people who try to stay up all night there. 2 men tried to stay up all night, but were lulled to sleep in a soft voice.

Legend has it that the people who live all night in the circle are never sane again. Many people report seeing strange figures like shadows on the tree line watching them. There are also reports of Satanic rituals occurring within the circle. People hear soothing sounds and melodies to make them fall asleep, then wake up a few miles away from the circle.

The actual basics

The actual camping spots are mostly naked, but include some vegetation. Objects as well as campers have repeatedly been in circles overnight. The site is often littered with broken glass and beer cans, as well as spray paint "creepy" in nearby trees.

In popular culture

The Devil's Tramping Ground is mentioned in two horror novels by Poppy Z. Brite: Lost Souls and Drawing Blood. Both of these novels occur, at least in part, in the fictitious city of Missing Mile, North Carolina; inspiration drawn from Duncan and Chapel Hill, NC and Athens, GA. Making Aviator near Fuquay-Varina NC produces a Belgian Trippel called Devil's Tramping Ground.
