LAX to expand FlyAway bus service to Santa Monica and Hollywood
src: www.latimes.com

FlyAway is a shuttle bus service created and funded by Los Angeles World Airports, which transports non-stop passengers to and from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Currently, there are five routes in the service with separate schedules. Most do not stop between LAX and their terminal station.

At the airport, the bus is distinguished by its light blue color and the appliques of the large FlyAway logo. Buses pick up travelers at each terminal on arrival level under green signs that read FlyAway, Bus and Long-Distance Vans . When dropping off passengers, the bus stops at every airport terminal at the departure level.

The routes of Van Nuys and Union Station use larger motorcoach buses, while the Westwood, Hollywood and Long Beach routes use smaller cutaway shuttle buses or low-floor transit buses. As well as using the blue FlyAway branded buses, sometimes FlyAway Bus routes use buses from fleet operators that do not have the same blue livery.

The FlyAway bus network is owned by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), which also owns and operates LAX and Van Nuys Airport. FlyAway is part of the LAWA ground transportation initiative to improve passenger comfort, reduce traffic congestion and vehicle emission pollution by encouraging high-end vehicle passengers as part of the LAX Mitigation and Reporting Mitigation Monitoring Plan.

LAWA reported the FlyAway network served more than 1.5 million passengers in 2008; saving its passengers from riding a combined total of 23 million miles of vehicles, and saving nearly a million US gallons (3,800,000 L) of gasoline.

Rute

Van Nuys

This route travels between LAX and FlyAway terminal buildings and parking structures located near LAWA's Van Nuys Airport. The Van Nuys FlyAway route provides 24-hour service, with buses departing every half hour throughout the day (except every 15 minutes during rush hour and every hour of the night).

Van Nuys is the only FlyAway location with a passenger terminal building (located at 7610 Woodley Ave), which opened on December 17, 2004. The US $ 34 million facility is designed to serve as a remote LAX terminal, and is designed with the ability to add ticket services planes and luggage services are listed in the future. The renovations also added a parking structure of 2,000 cars, more passengers drop-offs and new landscaping. This service is operated with a 45-foot motorcoater.

Van Nuys FlyAway is the original route and is the only FlyAway service for more than 30 years after it was launched on July 10, 1975. During its first year of operation, it transported more than 275,000 passengers. In 2008, the Los Angeles World Airports reported annual passenger numbers from its flagship location in the San Fernando Valley rose to nearly 988,000.

The Van Nuys FlyAway route is one of the few public transport systems operating profitably. Tariffs and parking charges charged to customers generate enough income that LAWA expects to have net operating income of approximately $ 168,000 in 2013.

Orange Line

Starting December 7, 2015, several trips on Van Nuys FlyAway make an additional stop at Woodley station on Metro Orange Line. This stop allows residents of the San Fernando Valley to reach LAX without having to go to the airport or to the existing Van Nuys terminal building.

Hourly service is offered at this stop between 4 am to 11 pm daily. The bus stops at a special bus bay on the south side of Victory Boulevard on east Woodley Avenue. No parking available.

Union Station

This route travels between LAX and Los Angeles Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. It is primarily intended for those who use public transportation to get to Union Station and then transfer to the bus to complete their journey. However, parking garages are available for those who want to drive to Union Station, although the rates are higher than in Van Nuys.

The Union Station FlyAway route operates 24 hours a day, with buses departing every half hour throughout the day (except every 20 minutes during rush hour and every hour of the night). Buses depart from Bay 1 at Union Station's Patsaouras Transit Plaza, and use the HOT line at Harbor Freeway (I-110) and the carpool/high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane on Century Freeway (I-105). Tickets can be purchased from the FlyAway kiosk at Patitouras Transit Plaza or at any Metrolink ticket vending machine.

The buses on this route look very similar to the Van Nuys bus, but the bus driver reminds the bus driver where the destination and the destination sign are in front of and next to each bus.

LAX FlyAway began offering services at Union Station on March 15, 2006 and has been hailed as a success by city officials from the beginning. Union Station is the second FlyAway service location opened. During its first year of operation, FlyAway at Union Station carried 250,000 passengers, more than three times the number predicted at the start of the service. In 2008, the Los Angeles World Airports reported annual passenger numbers rose to more than 433,000.

Westwood

This route travels between LAX and the Parking Structure of South 32 UCLA campus in Westwood.

The Westwood FlyAway route runs one hour from 6am to 10pm to the south and 6am and 11pm to the north by bus departing from UCLA and LAX at the top of every hour.

Drivers who take or take FlyAway passengers can enter and exit the 32 UCLA Parking Structure without paying any fees. Limited parking is available (25 stalls in a structure marked for FlyAway passenger use) of $ 12 per business day, $ 8 per day weekend and $ 63 for each 7 day period.

LAX FlyAway at Westwood began operations on June 14, 2007. The Westwood location is the third FlyAway route in the non-stop bus network to LAX.

The Westwood route was converted to a smaller, cleaner gas-fueled (CNG) gas bus in autumn 2008. The buses mostly run on intensive Interstate 405 Highway, so the average travel time can be 45 minutes or more during rush hour traffic.

During its first year of operation, FlyAway in Westwood transported 105,300 passengers, almost 10 percent more than the number predicted at the start of service. The 2008 annual number of passengers reported by Los Angeles World Airports is almost 125,300.

Hollywood

This route travels between LAX and stops located in the northeast corner of Argyle and Selma, one block south of the Hollywood/Vine station on the Metro Red Line.

The Hollywood FlyAway route runs hourly between 5:15 am and 9:15 pm to the south and at 6:15 am and 10:15 pm to the north with buses departing from Hollywood and LAX at 15 hours past.

From the beginning, more than 75 complaints about FlyAway Hollywood have been recorded, from buses arriving up to an hour late so as not to arrive at all. In December 2014, LAWA informed Corinthian Transportation, the contractor supplying services, that they expected immediate service upgrades; However, the organization does not specify what punitive action to take in the event services does not improve. Corinthian offered a plan in January 2015 to LAWA to improve its services, but was rejected for being inadequate. Corinthian claims that they have increased the number of buses on the Hollywood route, but by January 2015 the problem persisted.

Long Beach

This route travels between LAX and Shelter A at the Long Beach Transit Gallery in downtown Long Beach. This stop is near the Downtown Long Beach station

on Metro Blue Line and dozens of Long Beach Transit bus routes stop nearby.

The Long Beach FlyAway route runs hourly from 5:30 to 19:30 northbound and from 5.30 am to 10.30 pm to the south with buses departing from Hollywood and LAX at 30 minutes past the clock.

The service on the Long Beach FlyAway route begins on December 30, 2015. There is no FlyAway long-term parking in Long Beach, although public parking is available nearby. This route is for those living in Long Beach, those using transit, and those picked up or dropped off nearby.
