A flying fox is a small cable car, often driven by gravity, and used as a children's play equipment and less frequently for other purposes. The terms flying fox are Australian English and New Zealand English. In other countries, it is also known as zip-line or zip-wire. Toys should not be confused with the foxtail (or fox tail ), which is a children's toy consisting of a ball with a rope attached to it, allowing it to be thrown like a sling.

In South Africa it is referred to as Slide Foofy.

Description

Cables are installed at both ends and run through one or more pulleys mounted to the car. The car basically consists of anything from a handle to a passenger to hold, or a bucket to transporting small items, to a fairly elaborate construction that may include a chair, safety rope or a box with a cover.

A flying fox is a common way to return participants to the ground at the end of a rope adventure course. Out in Australia Outback, in the past, flying foxes are sometimes used to provide food, cigarettes or tools for people working on the other side of obstacles, such as sewers or rivers. Australian troops have used them to send food, letters and ammunition to the front in some conflicts.

To be driven by gravity, the cable must start from a high point and move downwards, usually forming a steep slope. Even then the car in general can not walk to the end, depending on the load. Meaning of a safe stop car at the bottom end is sometimes necessary. Cars can be restored in several ways, either by pushing them back to the top of the hill on foot (as is common in children's playgrounds because they do not hang away from the ground) or lines that lead from car to tip upward.
