History Edit
The Jacksonport community grew as a major commercial center in the mid-19th century. The city was militarily important during the American Civil War, and where General M. Jeff Thompson formally handed the Northern Arkansas Confederate Army to Union forces in 1865. In the 1870s the city was bypassed by trains, and rapidly declined thereafter as a river. delivery of goods decreased. The county seat was moved to Newport in 1891.
The establishment of the park began when Jackson County Historical Society purchased the abandoned courthouse for restoration in 1961. The area became a state park on 5 June 1965, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on January 21, 1970. The park also contains Jackson Guards Memorial, was added to the NRHP in 1996. In 1967, Mary Woods No. 2 , a steamboat sternwheeler in 1930 donated to the park. Opened as a museum in May 1976.
A pipe in the sternwheeler froze and rethawed, causing it to sink in January 1984, after which it was raised and restored. Then, on March 1, 1997, the state park, including Mary Woods No. 2 , suffered severe damage due to tornado F4. The Mary Woods No. 2 was restored in 2000 and reopened to the public at a cost of $ 870,000. This restoration "brings the steamboat as close to the look of actual operation," including a shelf filled with canned goods and tables prepared for dinner.
However, on January 31, 2010, sterwheeler sank again in its moorings in the middle of the snow cover. Police investigators fingered two men who visited the ship's museum that night and left footprints in the snow. District prosecutors accused the men of drowning the ships and their bonds were set at $ 500,000. In June 2000, people were acquitted of allegations relating to the sinking of Mary Woods. 2 and was released from prison because divers have found evidence that rusty pipes and gastric leaks are likely to cause sinks.. The Arkansas Parks and Tourism Department decides that rebuilding steamers is not economically feasible.
