Construction and management Edit

The lake was built by the US Army Engineers Corps (USACE), as permitted by the Flood Control Act of 23 October 1962 (Public Law 87-874) and described in House Document No. 469, 87th United States Congress, both hearings. Originally named "Bloomington Dam", its name was changed to Jennings Randolph Lake in 1987 in honor of the US Senator from West Virginia who was instrumental in this and many other water resources projects across the nation. Construction of the lake was completed in 1981, resulting in a flood of Shaw, West Virginia, and the rearrangement of the West Virginia Route 46. The dug, excavated earth and rock, 296 feet high, had a symbolic length of 2,130 feet and contained 10 million cubic meters of material. Jennings Randolph Lake strives to provide improved water quality and reduce flood damage downstream of the lake, provide a source of water supply for cities and downstream industries, and provide the public with recreational opportunities. With a conservation pond full of lakes, it controls a drainage area of 263 square miles, and is about 5.5 miles long and has a 952 hectare surface area. The lake, which functions as an emergency reservoir for the metropolitan area of Washington, DC, is managed by the Engineer Corps. The coordination of lake use for water supply purposes is administered by the Intergovernmental Commission on Potomac River Basin (ICPRB).

The shelter also collects acid mine drainage from an upstream coal mine, which improves the quality of river water downstream.

Hydroelectric facilities planned Edit

In 2008 Fairlawn Hydroelectric Company submitted a proposal with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to build a hydroelectric facility at the dam. FERC approves a license for a 14 MW facility on April 30, 2012. In 2016, Fairlawn Hydroelectric reports that it has not obtained a construction permit from USACE, and it has obtained an extension of the time from FERC to start and complete the project.
