Underground Poetry is a project, started in 1986, to bring poetry to a wider audience by displaying poems on the fast London Underground transit network and participating websites. The Poetry of the Underground features poetry by contemporary and classical poets three times a year. POTU also produces booklets for free to the public and publishes anthologies.

Histori
Launched in 1986, the underground poetry program is the brainchild of three writers, Judith Chernaik, Gerard Benson, and Cicely Herbert whose goal is to bring poetry to a wider audience. Judith Chernaik, Cicely Herbert, Imtiaz Dharker, and George Szertes now choose poetry for inclusion in the program. London Underground provides space on the train fleet, and they and POTU partners also feature poetry on their website during the duration of the printed display. These posters were designed by Tom Davidson.
The first book containing all the poems that were displayed was not published until some time later, as it was initially rejected by Faber because it was unlikely to prove commercial. In the end, towards the end of the decade, the Representative of a Young Publisher (salesman) persuaded his boss - Cassell Publishing - to publish a thick book when, having failed in his attempt to buy a publication that did not exist as a birthday present. for her mother, she felt confident enough to make her a bestseller. He set targets by publishing houses selling 5,000 copies by following Christmas publications, or risking losing his job. But the book - which is still widely printed 27 years later and should be classified as one of the best-selling poetry books of all time - soon sold out and immediately reprinted before publication.
Partners for Underground Poetry , including the London Underground, who generously supported the program, and the British Art Council, British Council, London Arts, and the Poetry Society.
