UPS Freight is a less than truckload (LTL) UPS trucking division. UPS was acquired on August 8, 2005, Overnite Transportation Company Motor Cargo from Union Pacific Corporation (parent company Union Pacific Railroad) for $ 1.25 billion. On April 28, 2006, Overnite Transportation officially became UPS Ground Freight, Inc. The logo on the door of the Overnite tractor is closed with signs indicating the operator as UPS Freight. UPS Freight immediately changed the tractor color scheme from blue and gray to UPS brown on the bottom, with a gold line near the center of the tractor and gray for upper color. All new vehicles purchased by UPS Freight LTL come painted in these colors as the older Overnite equipment is replaced, while the new tractor for truck division (Ex-Former Transportation - Special Services Division) is solid white with a UPS shield on the roof fairing.

UPS Freight is based in Richmond, Virginia.

Reasons for purchase

Prior to purchasing Overnite, FedEx had just purchased the American Freightways LTL (on the east coast) and Viking Freight (on the west coast), created FedEx Freight. UPS spokesman Norman Black told LTL industry outlet News FleetOwner has become attractive because of the increasing economic and strategic attractiveness of the sector: "[LTL has become] fascinating because of the consolidation and witnessing the survivors grow and thrive as they have improved Operating Ratio and develop new types of services that customers respond to - especially in a definite time delivery option... That's what Overnite has outlined and that's a big trend in the trade right now.Sure we see it in the package world. "
