Histori Edit

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park was named after John Pfeiffer, who lived in a cabin on the property beginning in 1884. He is the son of Michael Pfeiffer and Barbara Laquet. The Pfeiffer family immigrated from France and was among the first European settlers in the area. Many of the features in Big Sur are named for Pfeiffers descendants.

In 1930, John Pfeiffer had the opportunity to sell his land to Los Angeles developers for $ 210,000. Developers want to build subdivisions on the ground. Instead, Pfeiffer sold 700 acres (2.8 km 2 ) to the state of California in 1933.

In 1934, the Monterey Bay Area Council built Camp Camp while inside the park, but was abandoned after the summer camp season of 1937. The following year the Scouts built Camp Esselen at another location within the park. The site was remedied until 1945, when site limitations, proximity to public camp facilities, and conflicting jurisdiction between Scouts and states forced the council to request a replacement from the state for $ 8,000 in repairs. The council continued to use the camp until 1953. In 1952, the Scouts began building Camp Pico Blanco, and when the camp was opened in 1954, Esselen was finally closed.

Overnight stay Edit

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park owns a hotel (Big Sur Lodge) and a campsite within its borders. The campground closed in the winter of 2008-2009 due to the Basin Fire Complex, but mostly opened on May 22, 2009. The campground has a coin-operated shower, a bathroom and a shop. The department store also offers WiFi access.

Hiking Edit

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is known for its redwood plantations and lanes to Pfeiffer Falls. Slurry slides caused by Basin Complex fires necessitate changing the current Pfeiffer Falls Trail route. The resale of an old trail, with a wooden foot bridge, is scheduled to begin in 2016.

Crash Edit

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park was damaged by the Basin Complex Fire during June and July 2008, which burned 162,818 acres (658.90 km 2 ) in California. However, most of the damage occurred on the outskirts of the park, and the campsite could be reopened in late July. The Chalk Fire September and October, which burned an additional 16,269 acres (65.84 km 2 ), committed serious damage to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, most of which closed from September 2008 to May 2009.
