Recreation Edit
The Big John Muir Wilderness (580,323 acres (234,848 ha)) is to the east of Dinkey Lake and separated from it by the Dusy-Ershim Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) route. This corridor connects Kaiser Pass in the north to Courtright Dam in the south. There are three other OHV routes to the west of the wilderness boundary and popular in the summer months.
The three points of entry into the wilderness are; trailhead Cliff Lake at Courtright Reservoir, Dinkey Creek trailhead and the California Riding and Hiking trailhead located at D and F Pack Station on Kaiser Pass Road. There are 50 miles (80 km) of lines that offer various one-way trips and loops to the lake basin and mountain tops.
Peak of Dogtooth Peak (10256 ft or 3,126 meters) and Three Sisters (10,548 ft or 3,215 meters) offer class 2 and Class 3 climbing routes. There are 17 lakes in the desert with 14 of them stocked with gold trout, rivers and rainbows.
Winter recreation is limited by long distance from the hijacked road. The Sierra Peak Ski Area nearest to highway 168 provides access to the D and F Pack Station and a trailhead two miles (3 km) north of the desert boundary.
California campfire licenses and wilderness permits are required year-round for overnight trips and can be obtained at various ranger stations in the Sierra National Forest as well as the Courtright Reservoir Rights Reservoir building in Courtright Reservoir.
Quota available for Dinkey Lake Wilderness to limit and control visitor count. Permission is valid throughout the year and is shared between advance booking (60%) and walk-ins (40%). Each trailhead has a quota limit.
The Forest Service encourages the principle practice of Leaving Imagery on the journey of the wilderness to minimize human impact on the environment.
