Disney Transportation is a mass public transit system from Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake, Florida. The transport system provides a free service to the resort guests and consists of a monorail system, bus, boat, gondola system currently under construction and tram parking. Most of the routes operated by Disney Transport are buses that run along the resort's public roads run by the Reedy Creek Improvement District and private roads. None of these transportation modes impose tariffs, which makes the entire network free to use.

Features

At the resort, there is a screen that sometimes indicates when the next bus to the designated park will arrive. This technology tracks the bus through GPS technology to provide projected waiting times, although buses usually run at intervals of no more than twenty minutes. On top of the air-conditioned, ADA-accessible bus, announcements are played to show you points of interest and bus stops. This announcement uses GPS to determine which announcements to play in which locations. All buses are accessible to the ADA and can carry two wheelchairs/motorized wheelchairs per vehicle. Strollers must be folded before boarding the bus.

With Buena Vista Drive between Epcot Center Drive and the Disney Springs Lime Garage, new bus lines are installed between 2014 and May 2016 as part of the renovation of Disney Springs. This allows buses to/from Disney Springs and Typhoon Lagoon to use their own privileges, exclusively on the Buena Vista Drive median, allowing the bus route rapid transit to run to Disney Springs and Typhoon Lagoon. The bus line has also prioritized traffic signals, which will allow buses to travel faster through intersections along this corridor.

Route

While the bus system is a hub-and-spoke paradigm, it is more similar to the traditional hub-and-spoke flight model than the traditional public transit hub-and-spoke model because it has multiple hubs, both primary and secondary, with the route itself usually without stop. Four theme parks, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom, as well as Disney Springs, operate as five main hubs. Each of the four theme parks has services to 22 resorts, as well as to other parks. Disney Springs only caters to the resort, except for one-way service from the amusement park to Disney Springs after 4pm. Bus services are not provided on some routes served by monorail or boat, for example between Epcot and the Magic Kingdom, and between the Magic Kingdom and the resort on the monorail line.

Two water parks, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, do not have direct services to most resorts. They are achieved by transferring at Disney's Animal Kingdom and Disney Springs, respectively. The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex is only served on certain days, and only from and to Pop Century, Caribbean Beach and All-Star Resorts. Direct transportation between the fingers (resort) is not provided, unless they happen to be on the same bus route. Buses are also used for internal guest resort transportation in some of the larger resorts. Disney Transport buses also transport players around the resort. The Transport and Ticket Center (TTC) acts as a major center for the Walt Disney World Monorail System, as well as a transfer point to the boat service. The TTC is no longer served by Disney Transport buses, but this is one of only two transfer points from Disney Transport to the Lynx Orlando service (another transfer point, Disney Springs, takes 0.5 miles (0.80 km) to run between two services).

Starting in 1983, the bus destination was marked with a small colored flag on the front of the bus. At the time of flag introduction, the resort consists of two parks, four hotels, TTC, and Disney Shopping Village; there are also three bus routes that run exclusively inside Fort Wilderness Resort. Guidebooks are provided so that travelers can match flags with purpose. However, this became increasingly impractical as more parks and hotels were added, and flags had retired from the bus in 1995. Now, the destination or destination is displayed on the marquee of the electronic route on the front and side of each bus. The new bus (made from 2015 onwards) also has a tent behind every bus.

Fleet

Disney Transport operates the Nova Bus LFS bus fleet, Gillig Low Floor, and New Flyer XD60 Xcelsior. They have about 350 buses in their fleet with 50 Gillig buses further on orders in 2014, which will expand their fleet to 400 buses. This is an expansion of 319 buses in 2012, and from about 289 the previous year. Since 2013, some buses have used red-and-gray paint schemes, or red-and-white, with the new "Disney Transport" logo, with more buses repainted over the next few years. This is a change from the previous livery, where the bus is painted white with the red "Disney" logo and the word "Transport" in purple yellow text next to the logo.

Disney Transport has expanded its fleet with the new Gillig buses, and in 2014, they introduced the new Flyer XD60 Xcelsior bus articulated as a pilot project to increase capacity on certain routes. Some of the buses use cleaner renewable diesel fuel, and by 2013, Disney Transport begins testing all the electric buses on track. The fleet is currently the third largest fleet of all Florida transportation systems, behind Metrobus and the Jacksonville Transport Authority in Miami.

Disney Transport bus depot is located at 2451 Recycle Way, Orlando, FL 32830.

Current active fleet

In December 2016, there were 390 vehicles in the Disney Transport fleet.

Monorail

There are also three monorail lines from the Transportation and Ticketing Center to the Magic Kingdom or Epcot, comprising the free Walt Disney World Monorail System. Three lanes, and rolling supplies of twelve Mark VI monorails, are managed by Disney and form part of the Walt Disney World transport system. The monorail is accessible to the ADA and accessible to the stroller, although there is a vertical gap between the monorail and the platform, so wheelchair users must use a portable road, located at each station, to board the monorail. The monorail system was opened in 1971 with the monarchal "Kingdom" lines of the Kingdom of Magic and "Express"; the first runs in a circle between Magic Kingdom and TTC through Polynesian, Grand Floridian, and Contemporary Resorts, while the latter passes through the resort and goes directly between the TTC and the Magic Kingdom through a parallel loop. The Epcot line was added in 1982. By 2013, this system is one of the most widely used monorail systems in the world with over 150,000 daily riders.

Boat

The resort also has a boat fleet that provides additional access between Disney's various resorts and parks. The ferries are also free to drive. While multiple duplication routes occur (eg, Disney Springs Resort's water taxis to Disney Springs Resort Area duplicate buses to this same resort), the boat provides an alternative way to travel from one location to another.

Strollers can be transported above all boats, and ferries, motorized cruisers, Friendship Ships, and water taxis are accessible by ADA when water conditions are favorable. The motor launch can not accept an ECV wheelchair or is not folded.

Route

The highest capacity boat is the big ferry crossing the Laguna Seven Seas between TTC and the Magic Kingdom. The three ferries were wrapped in different trim colors and were named for past Disney executives: the General Joe Potter (blue), the Richard F. Irvine (red ) and the Admiral Joe Fowler (green).

The launch of motorcycles and cruisers connects several places in the Seven Seas Lagoon, using colored flags to show routes. Launch the Magic Kingdom link to Grand Floridian and Polynesian Resorts via Seven Seas Lagoon, using the Gold Route. The launch also connects the Magic Kingdom to Bay Lake via a water bridge to reach Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Camping Ground, using the Green Route. There is also the Blue Route motor launch between Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness Resort & amp; Campground, through the Contemporary Resort. Launch of the Red Route motor/cruiser from the Magic Kingdom directly to the Wilderness Lodge.

The water taxi, which also has a colored flag as a route indicator connects Port Orleans - French Quarter/Riverside (blue), Old Key West (green) and Saratoga Springs (yellow) to Disney Springs along the Sassagoula River. The fourth route, the red flag route, picks up passengers around Disney Springs.

Friendship Ship also links the entrance of Epcot International Gateway to BoardWalk Resort; Yacht and Beach Club Resorts; Swan and Dolphin Resorts; and Disney's Hollywood Studios. They also connect Epcot's Future World to Morocco at the World Showcase.

Parking tram

Disney Transport is also responsible for keeping the parking tram fleet used to escort guests between parks and their main entrance (except in Magic Kingdom, where trams drop guests at the Transportation and Ticket Center). Because the tram requires guests to move from one's wheelchair and to fold all the trains and wheelchairs before boarding, they are inaccessible to the ADA. Both the Magic Kingdom and the Epcot parking lot have two tram lines, with Magic Kingdom trains serving the "Heroes" and "Criminals" side of the parking lot, while Disney's Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom Disney parking lots have only one tramway.

The original tram tractor, built by United Tractor of Chesterton, Indiana in 1969, uses compressed natural gas. However, this tractor has many problems and is prone to frequent damage. The new tramway truck fleet, designed specially and built by Disney, began operation in 1972. These tram tractors, which initially used diesel fuel until they were converted to use compressed natural gas in the late 1990s, remained in service for forty-five year. By the end of 2016, new tram tractors begin to be tested at Disney's Animal Kingdom that uses propane to make it quieter and more fuel-efficient. After successful testing, Disney increased all tram fleet tractors to new propane-fueled tractors throughout 2017.

Skyliner

The Disney Skyliner gondola system was announced during the D23 Expo in 2017. This proposal was announced as part of the 23 launch improvements for Disney Parks. The three-way system will connect Disney's Pop Century Resort, Disney's Art of Animation Resort, Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort, and the new Disney Riviera Resort to Disney's Hollywood Studios and Epcot.

Minnie Van

The travel services named after Minnie Mouse were tested in July 2017, with the first Minnie Van service offered to guests staying at Disney's BoardWalk Resort, Disney's Yacht Club and Disney's Beach Club later that month. This service is now available to all visitors on the Walt Disney World property, whether resort guests are overnight or not. Unlike public transport, Minnie Vans charges a flat fee to transport guests anywhere within the Walt Disney World property. The vehicle is a Chevrolet Traverse SUV with a capacity of up to 6 passengers. Minnie Vans was asked to use the Lyft app of ride-hailing app.
