Sheep cakes or cottage pies are meat pie with mashed potato crust.

The recipes can vary greatly. The ingredients are minced meat (usually beef when named cottage pie or sheep when named shepherds), usually cooked with sauce with onions and sometimes other vegetables, such as peas, celery or carrots, and given mashed potatoes. Pie is sometimes also given grated cheese.

Etimologi

The term has been used by 1791, when the potato was introduced as an edible plant affordable to the poor (cf. "Pondok" means a simple stay for rural workers). The term shepherd's pie did not appear until 1854, and was used synonymously with a cottage cake, regardless of whether the meat is beef or mutton. In England, the term shepherd pie is now commonly used when the meat is lamb.
