History and design

Over the years, the French press has undergone several design modifications. The first coffee machine, probably made in France, was a modern coffee machine in its imperfect shape - a metal screen or a thin cloth mounted on a rod that the user would push into a pot of hot water and coffee powder. The coffee press was patented by Milan designer Attilio Calimani in 1929. It underwent several design modifications through Faliero Bondanini, who patented his own version in 1958 and began producing it at the French clarinet factory named Martin SA under the brand name "Melior". Its popularity may have been helped in 1965 by its use in the movie Michael Caine The Ipcress File . These devices are further popularized throughout Europe by UK companies under the name Household Articles Ltd and Danish tableware and Bodum kitchenware company.

The modern French press consists of a narrow cylindrical glass, usually made of clear glass or plastic, fitted with a metal or plastic cap and a plunger that fits tightly in the cylinder and has a fine stainless steel wire or nylon mesh filter.

Operation

Coffee is brewed by placing coarsely ground coffee in empty glasses and adding heat - between 93-96 ° C (199-205 ° F) - water, in the proportion of about 30 g (1.1 oz) coffee grounds up to 500Ã, ml (17Ã , USÃ, flÃ, oz) water, more or less sufficiently. The brewing time is about two to four minutes. Then the mesh or piston plunger is pressed, to separate the base and hold it on the bottom of the beaker. Mesh pistons usually do not compress coffee grounds, as most designs leave inexpensive space - about 30 mm (1.2 inches) - below the piston at the lowest position. If brewed coffee is left to remain in the glass on the basis of use, coffee can be both substance and bitter, though this is the effect that some French press users consider desirable.

The French press works best with roughly ground coffee rather than an artificial coffee filter, about the consistency of kosher salt. A finer base, when immersed in water, has a lower permeability, requiring an excessive amount of force to be applied by hand to lower the plunger and more likely to seep through or around the perimeter of the press filter and into the coffee. In addition, a smoother base will tend to overkill and cause the coffee to taste bitter.

It is believed that the optimal time to brew coffee is about four minutes, and some consider it spoiled coffee after about 20 minutes. Other approaches, such as cold brewing, require several hours of contact between the water and the reason for achieving the desired extraction.

Variations

Pressing France is more portable and self-sufficient than other coffee makers. The travel mug version is there, which is made of hard plastic instead of the more common glass, and has a closed cap with a covered drinking hole. Several versions are marketed to pedestrians and backpackers who do not want to carry heavy metal percolators or filters using water drops. Other versions include stainless steel, insulated press designed to keep coffee hot, similar in design to thermos. One variation uses the "pull" design: the coffee grounds are placed in the mesh basket, which is then pulled into the lid after brewing, trapping the base of the coffee. Others produce the same effect as having shutters that can be closed through the top of the press, sealing the base of the coffee completely. Pressing France is also sometimes used to make cold coffee.

Tea

In the same way as coffee, the French press can also be used instead of infusion tea to brew tea. To some extent, the tea will continue steep even after the plunger is depressed, which can cause the remaining tea in the press to become bitter. It may therefore be advisable to pour tea into a serving vessel after preparation. The same French press should not be used for tea and coffee unless it is thoroughly cleaned, because the residue of coffee will damage the taste of tea.

However, this method is more suitable for light tea and is not suitable for Chai Indians (to be boiled) or Chinese tea (which tend to be spread over a long time, with tea leaves reused as a rule).
