The fourth generation of Subaru Legacy was introduced in 2003 and saw the complete redesign of Legacy on an entirely new platform. Construction began in early 1999, with a style freeze in early 2001 and engineering recruitment in 2003.

On May 23, 2003, Fuji Heavy Industries continued to offer "Blitzen" models in Japan only, and debuted the fourth generation Legear B4 Hardtop Body for the Japanese Domestic Market with the Blood Type tagline: B4 and the commercial song is a remixed version of "GYMNOPEDIE No.1" When Touring Wagon Body debuted with tagline Grand Touring Specialty and its commercial song was "Finding Beauty" composed by Scottish composer Craig Armstrong from his second independent album, As If to Nothing. Model Hardtop Legacy B4 and Touring Wagon were selected as Japan Car of the Year 2003-2004, Subaru's first win for the award after struggling from fierce competition from Toyota Prius and Mazda RX-8. in 2005 Bruce Willis returned as a spokesman for the second time after the first generation in 1991 to 1993 with my tagline feeling LEGACY. Blitzen is a special package above the standard Legacy vehicle, and all Blitzen models are identified with "B4" branding.
Starting with this generation, Subaru installs an electroluminescent instrument cluster that lights up when the engine starts, regardless of whether the exterior light is on.
For the domestic market, Legacy B4 and Touring Wagon are offered in specification 2.0i, 2.0R, 2.0GT, 2.0GT spec.B, 3.0R, and 3.0R spec.B trim. The base model 2.0i has a SOHC version of an EJ20 engine that produces 140 PS, and 2.0R is equipped with a 165 PS DOHC engine. The DOJC EJ20 turbocharged engine is installed in 2.0GT and 2.0GT spec.B produces 280 PS Due to advancements in turbocharger technology and tightening emissions standards, twin-turbo setup is replaced by twin turbo and AVCS. 3.0R and 3.0R spec.B powered by a new EZ30 250 PS 6 cylinder engine.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the manufacture of Subaru and Japan's First Car of the Year of Victory, 50th Anniversary Legacy was released in January 2004. This special edition model is based on Legacy 2.0R, and 2.0GT.
The Legacy Blitzen in December 2004 was a special edition based on 2.0GT B4 and Touring Wagon. This high-performance sports model comes with special bright red colors, sport suspension, 18-inch alloys, unique grille, and aero-style bumpers.
Based on the Legacy 2.0GT.B B4 and Touring Wagon specifications, WR-Limited 2004 was released in July 2004, and the base 2.0 bt WR-Limited 2005 was launched in August 2005. Model WR-Limited is painted with WR Blue Mica, and comes with Gold alloy wheels, front under spoilers, special blue and black chairs, and special symbols.
Also added to the Japanese line-up in August 2005 is Legacy 2.0GT spec.B tuned by STI . This sport model has a Bilstein suspension, 6-speed manual, STI genome exhaust, Brembo brakes (front 4-piston, 2-piston rear) and 18-inch alloy wheels by STI.
Facelift model (2006-08)
The Japanese Legacy received cosmetic updates in May 2006. Important changes include new bumper, headlamps, front fenders, grille, and rear combination lamps. This facelift trickled into the export model in 2007.
Kazuyoshi Miura was used as a spokesperson for Hardtop, Touring Wagon and Outback and his commercial song came from Japanese rock band L'Arc-en-Ciel.
Although the value of the model remains largely unchanged, the number of option packs available for a particular class is reduced. The basic model of the Touring Wagon 2.0i can also be ordered as a Casual Selection model. Urban Selection Model added to 2.0R, 2.0GT, and 2.0GT SI-Cruise. 2.0R is also offered as a B-Sports Limited version.
EyeSight (2008-09)
In 2008-05-08, Subaru announced the EyeSight model for the Japanese market. It consists of 2 CCD cameras with one on each side of the rearview mirror, which uses a human-like stereoscopic vision to assess the distance and generally keep an eye on the driver. This system includes the ability to help the driver maintain a distance on the highway, a lane departure warning system, a wake-up call that reminds the driver to alter traffic signals, and pedestrian detection. SI-Cruise has been integrated into the EyeSight feature as a driver's safety aid. EyeSight is a brand new name for the Subaru security system previously introduced in Japan only in 1999 Subaru Lancaster (Outback) called Active Driving Assist (ADA)

STI S402 (DBA-BL9/DBA-BP9) (2008-2009)
The Legacy STI S402 is a limited edition (402 units) high-performance series for the Japanese market. It includes a 2.5L twin tour turbo engine with 285 PS (210 kW; 281 hp) rating at 5600 rpm and 392 N? M (289 lb? Ft) at 2000-4800 rpm, Bilstein shocks, 18x8 inch BBS forged wheels (from S203, S204) with Potenza RE050A 235/40R18 91W tires, Brembo 6-piston front brakes and 2-piston rear brake calipers (from Subaru Impreza type RA-R), Dynamic Control Vehicle Control stability. North American Model
Subaru of America started BL Inheritance and BP production in January 2004 for US and Canadian markets. Lance Armstrong was used as a spokesperson for both sedans and carts, and Sheryl Crow sang his 1996 hit "Everyday Is a Winding Road" in US market advertising as well Lafayette Factory built Subaru Legacy won 2005 International Car of the Year for the Most Reliable/Sedan from Road & amp; Travel Magazine, 2005 Automobile All-Stars for All-Star Family Car from Automobile Magazine and The 2006 International Engine of the Year Award in the 2.0 liter to 2.5 liter category for EJ255 engines.
This marks the return of a turbocharged engine to the North American Legacy, featuring an EJ255 engine rated at 250 hp unit 2.5 liters coming from USDM Impreza WRX with 20 more horsepower. Due to advances in turbocharger technology and tightening of emissions standards, twin-turbo setups are not being used. The Turbocharged model and H6 offer Subaru's first 5-speed automatic transmission, featuring licensed SportShift technology from Prodrive, Ltd.
The 2005 Legacy model for the US market is offered at 2.5i, 2.5i Limited, 2.5GT, and 2.5GT Limited. All trim levels are available as Sedan and Wagon. The cart body shares a sheet metal roof with an Outback model that lifts the metal "mounds" under the roof rails, unlike Japanese and European carriages with slender roofs. Another difference from other overseas markets, is that both sedans and carts have longer front and rear bumpers, designed to meet the 5-mph Canadian bumper specification.
For 2006, regular GT is dropped, and 2.5i Special Edition is added to the queue. Manual transmission is also stopped in the body of the station wagon. Price between base and Limited model, 2.5i Special Edition comes with power moonroof and power driver seat, while 2.5i Limited also comes with leather interior, electric front passenger seat, and automatic climate control air condition.
The high performance Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B comes as a limited edition model of 500 units for the 2006 model year in America, and became a regular model for subsequent years. It has Bilstein and 18-inch alloy wheels for better handling, Vehicle Dynamics Controls, and from 2007, 6-speed manual gearboxes and Subaru Intelligent Drive ( SI-Drive ) with three modes: Intelligent, Sport, and Sharp Sport. The 2.5GT spec.B model is available only in the sedan body and not the station wagon body.
For the 2008 model year, the Legacy sedan received a facelift with new bumpers, front fenders, tail lights, and alloy wheels. Currently, the Legacy train and Outback sedans are discontinued in the United States, leaving the Legacy sedan and the Outback train. Legacy wagon is not stopped in Canada. 2008 also brings a 3.0-L flat-6 engine to the North American Legacy sedan at the 3.0R Limited trim level. Flat-6 has been available on the Outback sedan wagon since 2000. For 2008, the USA 2.5i model has been certified PZEV emissions, and the badge has been attached to the rear of the vehicle on the lower right side of the trunk or tailgate rod. All other models are LEV2 certified. Legacy PZEV is available for sale in all 50 states, unlike other manufacturers that only sell PZEV certified vehicles in the state that have adopted California emissions standards.
European model

The Ecomatic Autogas Hybrid is a version of Legacy with 2.0R or 2.5R engines that can run on LPG for the German market.
Australian Model
Liberty BL and BP are offered in Australia starting 2004. Initially the model values ​​are 2.0i, 2.5i, 2.0GT, 3.0R, and 3.0R spec.B. 2.5i can also be ordered with Luxury Packages (in-dash CD Player, leather interior, driver's seat, sunroof), Safety Package (dual side side and curtain airbags), or Premium Package which is a combination of Luxury and Safety Packages. Premium package is also offered for GT. In 2006, Liberty 2.0i became 2.0R, and the 3.0R spec.B is also available as a Blitzen model with sport grille and aero bumper. For the 2007 model year, the new Liberty GT and GT spec.B receive a larger 2.5 liter turbocharged engine.
Outback
October 22, 2003, with the debut of the third-generation Legacy at the 60th Frankfurt Auto Show, the Outback name is now used in all markets with the launch of the third generation Outback train, which until then was only used in the export market. The model comes with 3.0L EZ30D H6 introduced at the Chicago Auto Show 2004. Ground clearance is 8.5 at (220 mm) in the US, so to get around fuel economy regulations, and 7.8 in (200 mm) most in place other. In some countries, such as Canada, it varies by what machine is installed.
This Outback generation carries the same model code as the Legacy Wagon: BP9 for 2.5 liters and BPE for 3.0 liter models. The highest trim levels offered in the US are the Outback "LL Bean Edition" which offers optional equipment as standard, including wood and leather steering, additional ports on the stereo for compatibility of external music players (2007 models and newer), hollow leather seats, GPS, double sized glass moonroof, and 3.0 liter H6 engine. Starting with this generation, the back of the rear cargo cover is retractable with a separate storage compartment in the reserve tire storage area so that the cargo cover can be removed for large items and stored out of the way in the vehicle.
A new Outback variant for 2005 and later is the Outback XT. This model comes with the same 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine found in the Impreza WRX model. This engine produces 243 hp (181 kW), which is much higher than the naturally aspirated 2.5L engine, which produces 175 hp (130 kW). The XT model comes with one of 3 standard transmissions: 4-speed or 5-speed Auto-SportShift, or a 5-speed manual.
In 2007, Outback (along with Ford Mondeo) won the "Car of the Year" award from Top Gear .
In 2008 models, the Legacy wagon and the Outback sedan were discontinued in the United States, leaving only the Legacy and Outback wagon models. Outback wagon also received a styling revision for the 2008 model year, especially the enlarged chrome ring lattice. In addition, in July, 2008 Subaru stopped offering a special edition trim level L.L. Bean in Outback.
For 2008, the USA 2.5i model is certified PZEV emissions and the "PZEV" badge attached to the rear of the vehicle on the lower right side of the trunk. All other models are LEV2 certified. EyeSight
Beginning in May 2008, Japanese Legacy spec can be equipped with a new security feature called EyeSight. It consists of two cameras, one on each side of the rearview mirror, which uses human-like stereoscopic vision to assess distance and generally keep an eye on the driver. The system helps keep a safe distance on the highway, alerting the driver during the departure of an unwanted path, emitting a wake-up call if everyone pulls away from traffic lights, and keeps an eye on pedestrians. SI-Cruise has been integrated into the EyeSight feature as a driver's safety aid.
Diesel
The Subaru EE Flat-4 diesel engine is offered in both Legacy and Outback models in Europe exclusively. This diesel model was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2008. Identified as "Subaru Outback 2.0D", it is offered with a 5-speed manual transmission only. The top JDM and EU diesel models also have a "Start/Stop" button, similar to those found in Lexus, Infiniti, Audi and other high-end makers.
According to a Subaru Owner on-line bulletin dated March 2008, Subaru plans to introduce the US Legacy and Outback diesel models, stating that they "... currently make modifications to diesel so as to meet tighter US standards." The Subaru diesel model should be available in the country in two to three years. "However, there has not been a diesel version of the Subaru model introduced to the US.
Ghost Walking Issue
A semi-unusual, unknown issue of Outback 05-09 sold in the US, and other countries with ground clearance above 7.8 in (200 mm) and not equipped with suspension leveling, is that the rear of the vehicle will oscillate and eventually swing (aka Ghost Walk) in wet or snowy conditions even while driving slowly on a straight and flat road with a snow tire. A number of possible causes have been explored but the general consensus based on available data is that increased lift provided for passing fuel regulations, and lack of load leveling, has played a major role in this issue. The reason is that the lift given the geometry of the rear multi-link suspension is changed so that the rear wheels end up being overloaded when the weight, like the person in the back seat or the cargo in the trunk, is loaded and the rear is compressed down.
This then causes the excessively large rear wheels to fight each other until one completely loses the grip, usually on slippery road surfaces, and the back is swung by the other. Subaru has released TSB with rear tire pressure and alignment adjustment for all 05-09 Outbacks with this increased suspension, but for some problems still exist. The best improvement that has been found is the installation kit camber adjustment aftermarket, due to a suspension OEMs do not have an adjustment of camber independent of adjustment toes cause you to sacrifice one for the other to fit perfectly, and springs back stiff, after the realignment with an extra  £ 200 up to 300 pounds of weight is added so it has a buffer zone for the hind legs. These fixes then allow for accurate and safe alignment settings to be maintained even with loaded loads, so there is no rear wheel in slippery conditions.
Liberty GT tuned by STi (2006, 2007, and 2008)
In 2006, Subaru released a limited edition of "Liberty GT", set by STi (TBSTI) and based on 2.0GT Sedan and Wagon. Only 300 were released. 300 facelift version of 300 units released and powered by 2.5-liter turbo engine. The 2008 model is limited to 250 and has a slightly different Brebos black and Enkei rim. The modified EJ255 engine is rated 264 PS (194 kW; 260 hp) at 6000 rpm and 350Ã, N? M (260Ã, lb? Ft) at 2800 rpm. These include Bilstein shocks, rear suspension kits with partial bus-bearing ball-jointed buses, 5 mm (0.2Ã, in) bottom springs, Brembo brakes (4-piston front, 2-piston rear) with stainless steel mesh-type brake hoses, The 18-inch ENKEI wheels (2.5 kg (5.5 lb) lighter above stock), front and rear IMS spoils, leather and alcantara front seats, and 8-way driver seats with memory settings.
