Gulf Islands National Seashore offers recreational opportunities and preserves natural and historic resources along the Gulf of Florida and Mississippi barrier islands. Protected areas cover terrestrial territories and parts of seven islands. Several islands along the Alabama coast were initially considered to be included, but in 2009, nothing was part of the National Seashore.

The Florida District from the coast has offshore barrier islands with shimmering white quartz sand beaches (along miles of undeveloped land), historic fortifications, and nature trails. Mainland features near Pensacola, Florida, including Naval Live Oaks Reservation, beaches, and military fortifications. All areas of Florida are accessible by car.

The Mississippi district on the beach has natural beaches, historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries, islands accessible only by boats, bays, nature trails, picnic areas, and camping. The Davis Bayou Area is the only part of the Mississippi National Seashore that is accessible by car. Petit Bois, Horn, East Ship, West Ship and Cat Islands are only accessible by boat. 4,080 acres ( Gulf Coast Wilderness offers special protection, within the coast, to parts of Petit Bois Island and Horn Island, Mississippi.

Significant damage to public infrastructure occurred as a result of storms during the 2004 Atlantic and Atlantic hurricanes. In subsequent years, infrastructure was fully restored. All highways, parking areas, campgrounds and visitor centers have been repaired and fully operational. Several associated lanes and sidewalks and cross dunes are still under repair at the end of 2010, especially near the Fort Pickens campsite.
