Silver Lake is an unrelated community in Preston County, West Virginia, United States. Silver Lake is located along the US Route 219 miles (12.1 km) north of Thomas at Tucker County.
This community is named for an artificial lake of the same name, located within a private camp in the community. Built in 1928, the lake is preserved by a small concrete dam and located in the upper reaches of the Youghiogheny River. Parks and campgrounds were also built in the 1930s, and at one time one of the more popular holiday destinations in the area, featuring camping, boating, swimming, picnicking, restaurants and games room, a small motel, and six small vacation cabins. Overnight garden facilities were very popular during the 1940s and early 1950s, prior to the development of large rental and cabin cabins in adjacent Blackwater Falls State Park, although the holiday cabins at Silver Lake were available for night rents to the late 1990s. The restaurant closes in the early 2000s and today, the park is primarily a private campsite, with many trailer campers housed permanently around the lake, and cabins are rented out to monthly tenants.
Trail to Hoye-Crest, the highest point in Maryland, just south of Silver Lake. Hoye-Crest, the top of Backbone Mountain, is located along the eastern edge of West Virginia - the state line of Maryland, while Silver Lake is to the west of the border. The Hoye-Crest trail, a one-time logging road on private property, is approximately 1.6 km (1.6 km) in height with a height of 700 feet (210 m).
The Catholic Church Our Lady of the Pines, expressed as "the smallest church in 48 states," is in Silver Lake. The church building is a 12-foot (3.7 m) church building with 24 altars (7.3 m) with an altar and 12 single-seat benches across the hall. The church is located near Horse Shoe Run and Eglon, WV. Adjacent to the church is "the smallest letter office in the world," the smaller post office of the church.
Prior to the construction of the lake in 1928, the area was known as Breedlove. Breedlove is the southern end of Preston Railroad, which carries timber from the surrounding mountains to a large timber mill in Crellin, Maryland. The train lasted until the 1920s, and was last used to transport road construction materials for upgrades to US 219, which passed the public. According to tradition, the community was previously named John Breedlove, an early 19th-century warrior.
