Slideshows is the presentation of a series of still images on a projection screen or electronic display device, usually in pre-set order. Changes can be made automatically and periodically or they can be manually controlled by the presenter or viewer. The slide show initially consists of a series of individual photography slides projected onto the screen with the slide projector. When referring to a video or computer-based visual equivalent, where slides are not individual physical objects, the term is often written as a single word, slide show .

Slide impressions may be presenting images solely for their own visual or artistic value, sometimes not accompanied by descriptions or texts, or may be used to clarify or reinforce the information, ideas, comments, solutions or suggestions presented orally. The slide show is sometimes still performed by the presenter using a tool such as a carousel projector or an overhead projector, but now the use of electronic video display devices and computers running presentation software is typical.

Histori

The slide show began in the 1600s, when hand-painted images on glass were first projected onto the wall with a "magic lamp". In the late 1700s, showrooms used magical lanterns to thrill the audience with apparently supernatural appearances in the form of popular entertainment called fantasmagoria. Sunlight, candles and oil lamps are the only light sources available. The development of a new and much brighter artificial light source opens up the world of practical applications for image projection. In the 1800s, a series of glass "lanterns" hand-painted were sometimes projected to illustrate storytelling or lectures. The wide and varied usage for entertainment and education evolved throughout this century. In 1900, photographic images on glass had replaced hand-painted pictures, but black and white photographs were sometimes colored with transparent dyes. Slide lantern production has become a fairly large industry, with standard dimensions at 3.25 inches high by 4 inches wide in the US and 3.25 inches square in UK and most of Europe.

"Performances of magic lanterns" are also presented as a form of home entertainment and are very popular among children. They continue to have a place in between commercial public entertainment even after the arrival of the projection of "moving pictures". Among the films, early cinemas often feature "picture songs," which is a community accompanied by lyrics and illustrations provided by a series of projected lantern slides. Cinemas also use their lanterns to project slide ads and messages like "Ladies, please take off your hat".

After 35 mm Kodachrome color films were introduced in 1936, a new standard 2-inch (5ÃÆ'â € 5 5 cm, cm) miniature lantern format slide format was created to better suit the small transparency of the film. In advertising, the term "antique magic lantern" is simplified, so the framed pieces of film are just "slides" and the lantern used to project it is a "slide projector". The magical magic show became an up-to-date "slide show".

Show slide shows are a relatively common phenomenon in American middle class homes during the 1950s and 1960s. If there is an enthusiast in the family, any visit from relatives or the arrival of a new Kodachrome slide stack of movie-processing services provides a reason for removing the entire 35 mm slide collection, arranging slide and screen projectors, turning on the lights, then endurance test from audience gathered with marathon photos and photos of old vacations taken at weddings, birthdays and other family events, all accompanied by live commentary.

An image on a 35 mm film mounted on a 2-2 inch (5.5-5 cm) frame, plastic card or frame is still by far the most common photo slide format.

Usage

A well-organized slide show allows the presenter to customize the visual image with oral presentations. The old saying "A picture worth a thousand words" applies, in which a single image can save the presenter from speaking a paragraph of descriptive details. As well as public speaking or teaching, certain talents, experiences, and exercises are needed to create successful slide show presentations.

Presentation software is most often used in the business world, where millions of presentations are created every day. Another very important area in which it is used is for learning purposes, usually with the goal of creating a dynamic, audiovisual presentation. Relevant points for the entire presentation are placed on the slide, and accompany the spoken monologue.

Slide impressions have artistic uses as well, such as being used as screensavers, or for providing a dynamic picture for a museum presentation, for example, or in installation art. David Byrne, among others, has created PowerPoint art.

In art

Since the late 1960s, visual artists have used slide shows in museums and galleries as a tool, either to present specific information about an action or research or as a phenomenological form in itself. According to the introduction of the Slide Show, an exhibition held at the Baltimore Museum of Art: "Through the simple technology of slide projectors and 35 mm color transparencies, artists discover tools that enable space transformation through image, text, and image magnification projected. "Although some artists may not necessarily use 35 mm slides or colors, and some, like Robert Barry, have even left images for text, the 35 mm color slide film is most commonly used. The images are sometimes accompanied by written text, either in the same slide or as intertitle. Some artists, such as James Coleman and Robert Smithson, have used voice-over with their slide presentations.

Slide impressions have also been used by artists who use other media such as paintings and sculptures to present their work publicly. In recent years there has been an increase in the use of slide shows by generations of young artists. The nonprofit organization Slideluck Potshow organizes a global slide show, featuring works by artists, photographers, and amateur and professional gallers. Participants in the event brought food, makeshift style, and social dinners before the slide show began.

Other famous artists who have used slide shows in their works include Bas Jan Ader, Francis Alys, Jan Dibbets, Dan Graham, Rodney Graham, Nan Goldin, Louise Lawler, Ana Mendieta, Jonathan Monk, Dennis Oppenheim, Allan Sekula, Carey Young and Krzysztof Wodiczko.

Digital

Digital photo impressions can be tailor-made for clients from photos, music, wedding invitations, birth announcements, or almost any other scannable document. Some manufacturers refer to the resulting DVD as a new photomontage. Slideshows can be created not only on DVDs, but also in HD video formats and as executable computer files. Photo slideshow software has made it easier to create electronic digital slideshows, eliminating the need for expensive color reversal films and requiring only digital cameras and computers.

Photo slideshow software often provides more options than just displaying images. It is possible to add transitions, pan and zoom effects, video clips, background music, narration, text, etc. By using computer software, one has the ability to enhance presentations in an impractical manner. The completed slideshow can then be burned to DVD, for use as a gift or for archiving, and then viewed using a regular DVD player.
