Histori

After starting service on March 11, 1985, the company expanded, expanding its services from the early coverage of Mid-Atlantic countries, so much so that it eventually became the largest subsidiary of its parent company, Akron-based Roadway Services. In 1996, RPS has reached 100% coverage from the United States and Canada. In addition, the Road Service has been reformed as a new parent company called Caliber Systems, Inc. .

In 1997, Fred Smith, founder of FedEx, contacted Dan Sullivan, RPS co-founder and now president of Caliber Systems, Inc., about merging the two companies. In 2000, FedEx incorporated Caliber System, Inc. which operates the company into FedEx organization with Robert's Express being FedEx Custom Critical and RPS to FedEx Ground. Viking Freight, originally operated under its original name, is a branded FedEx Freight in 2001.

FedEx Ground now provides delivery of small packages 1-5 days to 50 states, plus Canada. Land is also shipped to Puerto Rico, but the service was discontinued in 2009. The subsidiary also offers a special service known as FedEx Home Delivery which, together with Ground, serves all home addresses in the United States.

FedEx SmartPost

FedEx purchased Parcel Direct parcel consecutive in September 2004 from Quad Graphics. This FedEx Ground subsidiary was re-branded as FedEx SmartPost in October 2004. FedEx SmartPost uses FedEx for travel and uses the US Postal Service for final delivery to residence.

Pickup is populated by two different groups in FedEx Ground based on expected volume:

  • FedEx Ground Contractors takes the package for the Smart Post Small Shipper client and transfers these packages to SmartPost in FedEx Ground Hubs
  • The FedEx SmartPost trailer fetches the package for the "Smart Post Large Shipper" client and moves packets within the FedEx SmartPost network directly.

The resulting service is one that is cheaper than FedEx Ground but is more expensive than regular mail and generally takes two to four days longer than standard FedEx ground delivery, with tracking information but no service warranties.
