Weather Underground of Hong Kong (China: ???????, pinyin: xi? ngg? ng dÃÆ'¬xiÃÆ' ti? nwÃÆ' Â © ntÃÆ'¡i) is a non-profit website established in the year 1995 and directed by Mr. Fong Chi Kong Clarence.

This website provides various weather and climate related information. Air temperature, relative humidity, air pressure, rain and cold winds can be found on site. Radar and satellite views are also included to provide more comprehensive weather data for users. Local weather information comes primarily from the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), which collects data from foreign weather organizations, for example, satellite data from the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan.

The Weather Underground also forms forums, weather forecasting competitions, blogs and Facebook pages to provide a platform for weather fans around the world. Since the establishment of the website, the site has attracted over 100 million views worldwide, becoming the most popular weather-related website in addition to the Hong Kong Observatory.

Formation

Weather Underground was founded in 1995 by Mr. Fong Chi Kong, Clarence, to provide a communications platform for weather fans and experts to interact with each other. This is the first nonprofit website in Hong Kong and later became a community. It aims to provide a broader perspective on weather information, as well as introduce the latest technology and encourage official authority, Hong Kong Observatory, to update its technology to provide better service to Hongkong people.

By providing information from the Hong Kong Observatory as well as other research and meteorological institutions around the world, weather and expert fans can access information for comparison and analysis to get a fuller picture of the weather. The Weather Underground also provides proprietary information including weather indices (hot index, cold wind, K index, etc.), Surface and top-level SYNOP reports for Hong Kong, high-end weather maps for East Asia, lightning locations and atmospheric atmospheric field maps and maps tracks estimated tropical cyclones by various countries. Weather Underground also provides discussion forums in Chinese and English for weather and expert fans around the world to collect and share their ideas about weather, climate, and other related topics.

Founder

Fong Chi Kong, Clarence is the founder and now director of the Weather Underground of Hong Kong. He is an Experimental Officer at the Hong Kong Observatory and is currently a member of the committee of the Hong Kong Meteorological Society.

Development

Website

Initially the website is updated twice daily by hand at 8 am and 8 pm, but updates are now done every 10 minutes automatically.

In August 2007, the Weather Underground site changed its layout as well as upgraded the information provided - the current Warning animation, 7 Days Weather Forecast and daily climatology were added.

More Media

A blog, "??????", was founded in May 2005 to share extra weather information and knowledge about weather and climate. In December 2012, blogs become special columns on Yahoo! Hongkong

The Facebook Underground Weather page (???????) was created in March 2011. This page will update if there are any events and weather warnings, such as typhoons, rainstorms, monsoons and earthquakes.

Activity

Weather Forecast Contest

The Weather Forecast contest is a competition held by the Weather Underground. For each round of the contest, participants must estimate under four elements on Sunday at or before 23:59:59 every Friday:

  1. Minimum and maximum temperature in Hong Kong area,
  2. Minimum and maximum relative humidity in Hong Kong Observatory,
  3. Rainfall at the Hong Kong Observatory,
  4. Duration of sunlight at King's Park, Maximum UV Index at King's Park

A daily weather summary issued by the Hong Kong Observatory will be used for verification. If data is missing for any parameter, all forecasts for those parameters will be considered accurate.

The last round of weather forecast contest lasts for 12 weeks between 6 January 2014 and 30 March 2014. Round 32 of the contest is currently underway.

Weather Underground published a later report, questioning the validity of the Tropical Cyclone Warning System for Hong Kong. This led to a system revision by The Hong Kong Observatory in 2007.
